Install a Magnaflow Catalytic Converter, Universal Fit

This truck is exhibiting symptoms of a bad catalytic converter. It is sluggish and loses power on hills and based on its age, it is a safe bet that replacing…

FYI, We’ve moved our DIY videos to ZipZapDiy at:

John Kerns says:

I had to replace the cat. on my 95 I ordered it from magnaflow….. and it
came welded onto a mandrel bent Y- pipe….. for like two hundred bucks;
did it my self…. I was SOOO happy to see the manderel bends. sad part was
it didn’t come with any hardware or instructions.

Xeno EXTornado says:

Shouldn’t it have ports for O2 sensors? :S

Justin Nichols says:

did the extension pipe come with the converter?

xtmg2010x says:

I have 2010 Dodge Charger and my car makes a noise on idle and while it’s
moving, it’s sort of a tick tick noise. I’m thinking it’s the catalytic
converter, but I’m not sure. It does feel like it’s clogged though. When I
push the pedal down suddenly the rpms go up but not the speed. Could it be
the same problem?

candy5742 says:

Thank you so much you helped me a lot. I just saw this part and the low
price on advance auto part thought it was a mistake. Midas told me I need
the catalytic converter but from your video I see all I need is extension
pipe

xtmg2010x says:

It does seem like it’s clogged, like you said sluggish and underpowered.
And if my trans fluid does smell burnt what should I do? Flush and put some
new trans oil in? I have a auto btw.

Good video

Christian Latson says:

I am looking to do this on a Hyundai accent. Will it be as straightforward
as it is in this video???

rezamberezak says:

Nice job, i hope it would be straightforward for my truck too. Mine has 4
converters and replacing them with the muffler shop is gonna rip me off.
I’ll try to do it myself, looks not too hard …

kwazadilla says:

Same place as the converter, Pep Boys, I think it was under $10.00

Cesar R. says:

no startup? ಠ_ಠ

kwazadilla says:

Your cat may be attached to the exhaust manifold, it may bolt straight to
the manifold or be part of the manifold, go to a parts website and look up
your catalytic converter. It will most likely be more complex than the
video.

kwazadilla says:

welding is great, clamping is adequate, i have noticed no exhaust gasses
escaping around the joints. if you are concerned about leaks and have no
access to welding, you can use the wide band style exhaust clamps (about 4
inches wide and have 2 bolts in them) that do an excellent sealing job and
are only 3 times the price of the normal u clamps.

kwazadilla says:

it also really depends on the year accent you have.

how to/randomness says:

did you just use the clamps and not have to weld. please reply

bluejay02920 says:

Was the original one a California one and the new one not? Meaning your not
suppose to register the car in California now

Emma Pao says:

where did you purchase the extension pipe and how much was it?

ZipZapDIY says:

you would need a sawzall or other means to cut off the old cat and likely
9/16″ wrenches and/or ratchet to tighten down the new clamps. i would
highly recommend using the band style clamps instead of the u-bolt type,
you’ll get a better seal, i think the extra cost is worth it in the long
run.

danerobert14 says:

Did this solve the problem?

kwazadilla says:

The performance of the truck noticeably improved, It didn’t turn into a
spring chicken, but it is a lot more spirited. It was a safe bet on the cat
as the truck has 260k miles on it and service life of a cat is supposedly
around100-200k. All in it was $101. If you can sell your old cat to a
recycler (check your local laws, apparently recycling precious metals and
helping the environment is frowned upon in some areas) you can recoup
around $65-$100

kwazadilla says:

This truck is not a California emission vehicle. No idea if the universal
cat is Cali Spec. As far as i know this still applies….If i wanted to
move it to California, I’d have to pay an “environmental impact fee”
regardless of how well it does on emissions, even if it surpasses the Cali
requirements (Total BS). If it was a California spec truck and you changed
the cat, and If you passed emissions, they would never know.

LucasLand says:

are these cats less desirable to thieves, since they are under $100 new?

ZipZapDIY says:

I would think so, but they probably wouldn’t know it was different until
they got underneath to steal it, so they would probably take it anyway. Lame

Anthony Mattina says:

So we can hear how it sounds 😉

Tim Grimes says:

Great installation and thanks for explaining how to do this – clearly. Much
appreciated. I plan on doing this on a 1992 Isuzu Trooper. Thanks again.

danerobert14 says:

Shane Adams says:

can someone tell me what tools i would need to do this i just want to
double check?

kwazadilla says:

why show a start up in the video? you know how to turn a key don’t you! 🙂
