How to replace Spark Plugs on Honda Fit or Jazz 2009-2013 (Fix P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304)

This is a fast-paced tutorial for replacing the spark plugs on a 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 Honda Fit and Honda Jazz.

This video would also be helpful if you just wanted to find the Honda Fit spark plug location.

Replacing the spark plugs and/or ignition coils is a very common fix if your check engine light is on and your car has a diagnostic trouble code of P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, or P0304.

The Honda Fit is also equipped with a service indicator on the dashboard. If there is a number 4 illuminated on your speedometer the vehicle is recommending you change your spark plugs.

This can be a costly service at the dealership. It takes a bit longer than most cars due to the fact that the wiper arms, cowl trim, wiper washer hoses, and cowl shield need to be removed.

Here is a list of tools I use in this video in order of which they appear: pocket screwdriver, electric impact driver, 14mm Socket, needle-nosed pliers, 10mm socket, 10mm wrench, 6″ socket extension (1/4 drive), 1/4″ drive flex-head ratchet, 5/8″ spark plug socket, 6″ socket extension (3/8 drive), 3/8 drive flex-head ratchet.

holy crap honda, all that trouble just to replace the spark plugs. Scotty recommends you checking on the vehicle spark plugs for any signs of blow-by before getting a used car. trying doing it on a honda and the dealer would probably chase you out.

I took my 2013 Fit in simply to have the tires rotated and replace the four spark plugs. When presented the bill by my mechanic who I've always been happy with, I experienced sticker shock to the point I was ready to find a new mechanic. I appreciated your video because it showed that time-wise it wasn't the quick simple job I had assumed it was.

Man, I just changed the plugs in a Honda 2011 FIT, just reach in (with left hand) with a 10 mm socket and undo coil pack and unclip. Then reach in with plug socket and remove. Do the cylinder on passenger side first to get the feel of it. Don't need to remove wipers and other plastic components.

This is a very informative video. You've got some tricks I hadn't seen before and I've got a few that I'll add momentarily. It also reminds me of the office where I worked and retired. If you took one question to 10 editors, you'd get 10 different answers ha-ha.

Anyway, having replaced the plugs on my '09 Fit a couple of times I've picked up a few tricks to shorten the required time and make everything go back together again as designed.

1). Honda's fasteners are pretty much designed for single usage, more so the plastic trim fasteners than the bolts, screws and nuts. I make sure I have a set of the trim fasteners like those white ones (90602-TK6-A00) that hold the lower curved trim pieces to the windshield pillars. Those blue ones (90602-TA0-003) that hold the cowl screen in place aren't especially durable so they're good to have on hand. The two black retainers (91501-SL4-003) at the lower ends of the cowl screen can sometimes be saved. And, before I ever removed the coils for the first time I got four stainless 6 mm X 25 mm bolts to replace the originals. Make sure you have some anti-seize for the threaded fasteners and the new plugs.

2.) If you're going to be working on a car with an automatic transmission, now's a good time to remove the air cleaner assembly and replace the ATF filter (Honda 25430-PLR-003, Beck Arnley 044-0382). Get three quarts of the proper ATF while you're at it.

3.) Before removing the wiper arms and blades, I put a short strip of Scotch tape on the windshield where the blades normally sit. That way they'll go back into the correct positions before tightening the retaining nuts.

4.) I've never removed the rubber stripping from the bottom of the cowl cover, but to each their own.

5.) If you disconnect the windshield washer hose at the joint by the reservoir you can avoid having to separate the passenger side section of the cowl screen to get at the Y-joint.

6.) The wiper transmission can remain mounted to that metal tray. I've never separated mine. All I did was lift the tray and wiper transmission as one unit. I'll admit that getting to the bolt and flat washer in the driver's side far corner is a bear, but your method avoids having to disconnect and reconnect the wiper motor and cycle it through before replacing the arms and blades.

7.) NGK now has a ruthenium plug for an upgrade from the iridium version. I went with ruthenium at the most recent replacement and all is well. The '09 calls for FR6AHX-S (or 94279) for ruthenium and IZFR6K-13 (or 6774) for iridium.

This video is incredibly helpful! Thanks for making it!
We did notice one thing that would improve it, however- the power source wires that attach above the spark plugs were not easy to remove, mostly because we couldn't see what you did to them just before removing them. Adding wording on the screen, such as "*click*" would have let us know we needed to do something, like push the tab on top of the plug, that made a 'click' sound before being able to pull the plug and wires away from where they were connected.
Besides that, the video was easy to follow and showed me how to successfully change my spark plugs today! Thanks! 🙂
