How To Cheaply Fix a Noisy Honda Power Steering Pump

Power steering noise such as moaning or whining can be common and easily fixed for many Honda vehicles. For Honda vehicles, that are equipped with the power steering pump shown in the video, this noise is usually caused by old worn out O-rings that fit onto the suction and high pressure lines where they bolt up to the power steering pump.

Usually what happens is that these O-rings will allow air to be introduced into the power steering system and cause the power steering pump to cavitate. This is where the noise occurs.

This video is designed to help you to understand what may be the problem with your vehicle and also to help you to understand how to repair this problem.

The vehicle featured in the video is a 2005 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5L

As promised the part #s for the o-rings are as follows
91370-sv4-000 and 91345-rda-a01
Both o-rings where purchased for just $6.52

Thanks man this video was a big help

K Owen says:

I paid someone to replace the leaking top hose. Afterwards, it squealed like a banshee. They claimed it would just take time to bleed out the air. (B.S. – no change after a week)
The dealer told me the only thing it could be is a bad pump. (Idiot)
I used a turkey baster to remove the fluid from the reservoir. Hardly any spilled.
I got the pump out. removed the bottom pipe and noticed there was no resistance. The new o-ring on top was very hard to pull off.
This made me suspicious. I tested the spring of the o-ring. It broke into 3 pieces.
I figured it was worth a shot, so I put on a new o-ring, put it all back together, and like magic, it works fine with no noise.
I'm guessing when they replaced the top hose, even though they didn't touch the bottom hose, while the fluid was drained out, the o-ring dried out and became like glass.
Thanks for your video. I may not have had the confidence to try putting everything back together without the new pump if I hadn't seen this video. Saved $130

Nice video bro.
I have a honda accord 3.5 v6 2009, which is making a very loud noise. I did not find anything related to my model. Could you tell me if the problem would be solved by changing the ring? Thanks

Spraying brake cleaner onto rubber and plastic isn’t that bad?

This is a great video. My 08 Odyssy has the exactly same problem. If I do not fix it, does it cause another serious problems? It is noisy but I am fine as long as it does not cause another issues. Thank you

APPLE PIE says:

i have the same problem. but i also have hard time steering ( it feels like manual and you need two hand's force to steer) my car in the cold mornings. specially when you make sharp turn getting in and out of drive way and in roundabouts. after 6 to 10 mins later its become normal . i changed power steering oil ,still has bubble in the system. what do i do ?

Alain Le Pain says:

I added some oil and it was good, will see if it last..

Will Ruiz says:

My power steering is also bubbling but I’m also getting a whining noise now, and has been getting louder as it’s been getting colder I also noticed the noise got louder when I turned on my AC at times but still was there with it off , do you think this may be the source of the problem??

Hammer says:

You should get yourself a set of Dental Picks to pull your o-rings. Much smaller so you can get under the o-rings easier.
