Honda DIY Head Gasket – Vehicle Will Not Start Now

Honda DIY Head Gasket – Vehicle Will Not Start Now

There is an old sayin’, “Some times you get the bear and sometimes the bear get’s you.” In the case ogf this van the bear got the owner. He and a friend attempted to DIY their head gaskets on this 2004 Honda Odyssey and unfortunately the crank gear has two marks on. Some of you know where I am going with this…. -Enjoy!

I hate to see and work behind lousy assembly jobs like that. I'd rather wait until I have the time get to it myself than let anyone else touch it. Well, anyone but a proven mechanic/tech, not just anyone. Great job as always, Mr. O.

The timing belt on this engine is very easy and straight forward to accomplish, as opposed to my 2000 4Runner which is more involved. No excuses!

Just spray it with the GOOD STUFF!!!

I feel bad for the owner of the vehicle. Thanks for the video, very informative.

Did you get a new camera clear nice

apachelives says:

Head bolts probably not even torqued down correctly let alone intake manifold or anything else important even the drive shaft bolt doesn't look like its on tight – its not even crimped. Ouch.

Jim Rini says:

How much did you charge for the diagnostic?

Ryan Hodges says:

Hey Eric,
I got my Astro light a couple days ago. It works great! Iā€™m glad they decided to put a better hook on it. I hope you are feeling better.

Bighappy says:

they didn't follow the process.. you always bring it around to TDC before disassemblly and mark your marks to not make mistakes like this… One simple missed step. I wonder if he had a teenager who did this job for him in auto shop class… kind of feeling that way with all the lose bolts.

george gonzalez says:

I feel for the customer. Last summer I did a similar timing belt on an Acura TL. Tighter quarters than on the Odyssey and it took me three tries to get the timing right. Fortunately, no bent valves.

Fuddy Duddy says:

I think you should change it to: "Just remember folks, if I can do it….doesn't necessarily mean you can."

Rodney Farmer says:

If you do get the job do you go back to complete tear off of both heads since every bolt has been left no factory spec?

dave1135 says:

Bought a 2000 Chevy cavalier with a 2.2 4cyl. Owner was a 18 year old. Car was clean and in good condition. Kid said him and his dad just changed the head gasket. Car ran fine for a month, then started using coolant and overheating. Went to tear it down to replace gasket and see what happened. Found many bolts just finger tight or completely missing. Went to remove head bolts, found them loose. I was able to break them loose with a 3/8 six inch ratchet. Bolts were never torqued. Also, nothing was cleaned, pieces of old gasket were still stuck to head and block. Checked head and found warp, machine shop had to mill .030 thousands off to get it flat again and it required a steel shim to get the compression and valve clearance back in spec. Apparently this kid knew just enough to be dangerous. I got it back together and my daughter has driven it 10,000 miles with no problems.

New cash flow opportunity for you Mr O. Ditch the Pico and start traveling the U.S.A with training seminars on how to diagnose using the cars aura. šŸ˜‰ šŸ˜‰

It was a pleasure meeting you. You and Keith are both honest outstanding guys
