How To Replace Vehicle Speed Sensor in 1988-2005 Chevy GMC Truck & SUV

If your ABS light is on, transmission is slipping, and/or speedometer is inaccurate, your vehicle (or transmission or transfer case) speed sensor may be the culprit. In this video I show you step by step how to replace your speed sensor in a 1988-2005 GM Pickup and SUV.

Found this video looking to learn why my '88 Silverado's heater/ac fuse blows when I put the truck into 4WD, and I've got no 4WD. In 2WD, no issues with heater. From what I read elsewhere, sounds like replacing the VSS may solve the problem? I'm no mechanic, but looks straightforward, gonna give it a try shortly. Thanks for the video

I drive a 1995 Silverado. The check engine light came on a couple weeks ago and been shifting rough. I saw your video today and bought a speed sensor at auto zone 86.00. Took 10 minutes and problems went away. Thanks for posting this how to do video. What helped me most you gave the symptoms of a bad speed sensor. Thanks again.

Jeremy Myers says:

Could this part be what is causing my 95 silverado to not have tac or speedometer as well as transmission shifting issues?

rrayw757 says:

Today was about the third time my 2001Silverado will not shift out of 1st. The other times it would go back to normal after speeding up and letting off the gas. This time it stays stuck but will shift to reverse and park. I will change out this part.

I think my speed sensor went out. My 96’ Tahoe started sifting funny last week. Today I was driving back to the rig and I was 15 miles out I had to drive 50mph at 3k RPMs then on dirt road 5 miles out 25 mph when I hit a down hill spot my transmission drove normal for almost a mile then back to slipping. I had my transmission rebuilt 5 years ago.

Al Putney says:
