Rod will not lift up high enough to allow the actuator arm on the new pump
to get under it? I have turned themotor over several times trying to find
the poin on the cam that lets the arm up, but so far it is only rising
about 1/2 inch above the housing? What can I do?

LgTNinja says:

What is the best way to push that rod up? I can’t get mine to go up into
the moter so I can get my fuel pump on.

My fuel pump rod has dropped down and will not raise up sufficiently to
install new pump actuator arm under it? Ihave turned themotor over trying
to get the cam to allow it to slide further up into the engine but it won’t
go far enough to get the arm under the rod? What next?

amazingly helpful, i’m glad i have an old beast i can work on this easily.
thanks!!

AirtexFuelPumps says:

If the new fuel pump is physically different it could be that the pump
design has changed over the years. But it would be a good idea to make sure
that you have the correct pump before installing it. Please call our free
tech line for verification: 800-424-7839. Thanks.

Also my fuel pump is on the driver side and its the same type of pump you
installing

QueerByDefinition says:

What causes a mechanical fuel pump to fail? Will my gas pedal “soften”
because of a faulty mechanical fuel pump? Will my fuel pressure drop if the
pump has gone bad? I just ordered one of your pumps from Summit Racing to
install in my 1980 Buick Regal, 3.8L V6. The car would shake on a cold
start, but the shaking would stop when the engine warmed up. The car won’t
start at all now. Is that a clear sign of fuel starvation? Please answer my
questions, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

AirtexFuelPumps says:

There are a few things that can cause a mechanical fuel pump to fail. The
diaphragm can become weak or burst, the inlet & outlet valves can fail to
seal, or there can be a mechanical failure. You won’t notice any change in
the gas pedal as the fuel pump is not connected to it. There can be low or
no fuel pressure if the pump is faulty. This could be a faulty fuel pump
but it also could be a number of other things. (Running out of
characters… see next post)

Andrew McCue says:

So the only fuel pump Autozone carries for my 84 z28 has three outlets on
the bottom, instead of two. The hell is that all about and what should I do?

AirtexFuelPumps says:

Richard can’t remember for sure, but based off of the fitting size on the
print we believe it would be a 3/4″ wrench that would be needed. Hope this
helps. Thanks for watching!

Dakota McCullough says:

Should I replace my fuel lines when replacing the pump? Is it necessary?
The lines are more expensive than the pump.

Spencer Courreges says:

I have the right feel pump but I cannot insert it in all the way

AirtexFuelPumps says:

If the bolt holes do not line up, then you most likely have the incorrect
fuel pump for your application. Please call our free tech line for
verification: 800-424-7839. Thanks.

AirtexFuelPumps says:

You need to check the fuel pressure first. The correct fuel pressure for
your application is 4.25-5.75 psi. If the fuel pressure is correct then you
need to check the carb & ignition system. If the fuel pressure is low then
the fuel pump could be at fault. If you need any more help please feel free
to call our free Technical Assistance Hotline: 800-424-7839. Thanks.

Alot327 says:

What if my new pump has a different number than my old one and the old one
is longer?

Alot327 says:

How come the new pump bolt holes dont line up with the block

AirtexFuelPumps says:

Hello Dakota: Replacing the lines is not a mandatory step when replacing a
faulty fuel pump. They would only need replaced if they were damaged,
leaking or severely corroded. If they appear to be in good shape, go ahead
and use the originals. If you need any further help, don’t hesitate to call
our free tech line: 800-424-7839. Thanks for watching.

AirtexFuelPumps says:

According to OE data, your 1984 Chev Camaro 5.0L does show to use a fuel
pump that has 3 ports. If this does not match with what you currently have
on the car, please contact our Tech Line: 1-800-424-7839. They can assist
you in obtaining the correct pump. Thanks.

AirtexFuelPumps says:

If you are having trouble installing it, rotate the engine slightly around.
This will turn the camshaft to the low part of the lobe. This will make the
installation easier. If you need more help on this or anything further,
please don’t hesitate to contact our free tech support line: 800-424-7839.
