Nick Stageberg says:

You should not have any play in any direction with the wheel off the ground. If you have any top to bottom 12 to 6 o’clock play, then it is likely your wheel hub/bearing needs to be replaced.

Nick Stageberg says:

Interesting, I’ve never heard of such a tool, but it seems like it would work.

trickyricky61 says:

I Have a 2003 Sierra and when i had my hubs replaced the mechanic ordered a bolt like the ones to secure the hub, except it was longer. He would screw it in and put pressure on it, then hit the hub with a shot hammer, then crank it down some more, then he backed it off and ran it down another bolt hole to put pressure on that side and the hub popped right out. It was heavily rusted from the road salt here in Maine.

i have an 01 silverado and would it be the same and mine does not make any noise but when jacked up the wheel wabble in all direction ball joints felt tight but really easy to wabble is it a bad bearing ?

Nick Stageberg says:

An impact gun isn’t a huge help on this procedure, you won’t have any problems without one.

Nick Stageberg says:

Awesome!

Kyle Wade says:

Great Video! Thank you for your time to make this. I handled the job in 55 minutes. My hub fell out without any challenge. Pleasure of not living in snow county or salted roads. Again, your video is spot on and the tip to put the wheel on and rock the hub out is key “IF” your hub is stuck!

bgoza93 says:

Awesome video! But i do not have an impact gun. How hard would this be without one?

Nick Stageberg says:

Sounds about right, glad you were able to figure it out!

ezskanken says:

Thanks Nick! Did it and all is well with the wheel bearings. Did more looking around and found it to be a worn out u-joint.

Nick Stageberg says:

Unfortunately the procedure is different on that vehicle.

Nick Stageberg says:

That is an outstanding suggestion, I will put that in the video!

Nick Stageberg says:

Potentially, but what you are describing sounds like a driveline issue (engine, transmission, differential). Perform the test I describe in the video testing top to bottom play in the wheel and that will tell you if your wheel bearing has failed.

ezskanken says:

Would a bad wheel bearing make any kind of noise while driving? Particularly only when the accelerator is pushed. When the accelerator is not being pushed, the noise will stop, but as soon as I step on the gas again it starts up. It is very annoying, and I’d like to address the issue ASAP. Thanks for the video!

jeepstealth says:

put the wheel back on with 3 lug nuts and bump the top of the tire with the palms of your hands mine fell right off

rheather627 says:

Same procedure for a 1997 tahoe? I have hex head bolts holding my calipers on and they don’t seem to want to spin out. There’s resistance for about 3/4 of a turn and a about 1/4 turn of free play.

Nic l says:

saving my min wage but today as this failed inspecton on me today

Nick Stageberg says:

Correct.

Jack Begley says:

This would be the same procedure on a 2004 GMC Yukon Xl, correct?

Sherman Brown says:

Thanks Nick, it’s really nice for you to make the video, will be changing out the assembly on 2000 Silverado tomorrow. I appreciate the help.

Nick Stageberg says:

Great!

pitagmc says:

Thanks a lot video help me on my 2000 GMC SIERRA. ….

Nick Stageberg says:

I’m glad you found it helpful!

Kelly Little says:

Thanks for the video, guys! Definitely helpful for me to view it before we tackle a wheel bearing and hub replacement on our 2001 GMC Sierra.

Nick Stageberg says:

I’m sorry, I thought I was responding to a different video. You are correct, this procedure is different on a 98 full size chevy.

Nick Stageberg says:

Yikes. Probably, but that would make it all the more difficult. Getting an angle grinder in there to cut off the bolts without damaging anything else may be challenging as well. At that point it might be easier (and cheaper) to purchase an entire wheel hub and bracket assembly from a junk yard.

MichaelWalmer says:

my bolts are now stripped can I cut the heads of and still pull bearing assembly out ?

stchman says:

I am going to disagree with you. The 1998 Chevy full size trucks have a more traditional setup where the bearings are contained in the hub of the rotor (on 2WD models). This is all assuming 2WD models as you are working on a 2WD model in this video.

Austin Myers says:

is this replacment procedure the same as it would be on a 98 chevy silverado 1500 5.7??? Thanks

Nick Stageberg says:

Glad you found it helpful!

Ken Say says:

gonna tackle this on my suburban thanks for the video !!

Nick Stageberg says:

You can do it!

robineisme says:

lmao! Wish you were nearby to help! I am a female that knows nothing about cars and a limited budget! Guess I will have to have my laptop nearby watching this!

Nick Stageberg says:

Interesting, I’m surprised that has enough leverage but I can see how that would work

trickyricky61 says:

I Watched a guy change mine at the shop and he removed a lug nut and used a large bolt and washer and nut. He used it to leverage out the hub from the hub main base somehow. He just used a open end wrench to turn the nut on the backside of the hub ring at the lug hole and pulled the bolt towards the hub mount and popped the hub assembly out. Took him about 8 minutes.

missouritiger09 says:

I remember banging on the back of that thing for hours until I finally said F’ it, grabbed a crow bar and used the edged end to separate the hub assembly from the flange. I nearly destroyed the dust cover doing that though o.O

Nick Stageberg says:

Correct.

panrider60 says:

all in all nick you did get the job done, and I guess what ever works, works, I ended up having to do one on my wifes grand prix and did find your vid helpful… take care

Nick Stageberg says:
