GM VATS Key / Resistor Key Security Bypass

GM VATS Key / Resistor Key Security Bypass

In this video Eric O. and the crew at SMA show you how to bypass the security system on older GM’s that use the resistor pellet chip key also know as the VATS (Vehicle Anti Theft System ) We demonstrate it on the 1994 Chevrolet Corvette but works the same all the way across the board on older GM VATS systems.

Hello. My name is Andy. I changed starter on 1985 Corvette but still there is no crank no start which is why I replaced starter in the first place. This car is manual. I jump started it with remote from underneath car.
This turned the engine, but car will not start from ignition. Battery is new. When I got the car, there was no chip on the key. If you have any idea what the issue might be, I would appreciate your input. Thank you.

Okay so question AFTER you bypass it can you put a new key lock cylinder WITHOUT the orange cable ?! I ask because i have a 1992 camaro (3rd gen) and i found this badass chrome key lock cylinder from a 87 but it doesn’t have the orange wire & the keys themselves dont have the resistors either now my guess is if i bypass the vats system there will be no problem putting this new lock cylinder but i would like a second opinion! So if you dont mind id like to hear from you please and thanks!

Marshall Magsam says:

Thank you for the information. May I suggest taking your non compliant key, inserting into ignition, turn it to the run position for 1 hour then start your car? Let me know if it works.

I hate engineered obsolescence. I wonder how many GM cars got junked because of some micro wires. Mine isn't broken but if the cabin is too hot she wont start. I roll down the windows for a bit and viola, she starts. Her CD player is the same way. Error code E20 or too humid to play disc. My solution? I own three antique cars. Good video.

Paul Thompson says:

Those butt connectors add resistance. Why not do some type of military splice across the 2 wires and wrap it all and add cable ties to secure the wrapping?

I used to have one of those on my 1988 Firebird GTA after I bought the car Eric it was a biggest pain-in-the-ass the dealership was 40 miles away I went through four sets of keys within two weeks the dealership finally did the same thing you did there and that was back in 1988 is a beautiful car ran great but that security system really sucked .

Brandon Whitmore says:
