my 95 Trans Am lt1 is misfiring only when is completely stopped when i accelerate a lil bit runs just fine according to my mechanic it gives a low spark to the sparkplugs he thinks is this distributor but i don’t think this is the trouble cause it smells like gasoline real bad when it makes that failure when its cold doesn’t do the failure so hard as when its hot i already change the sparkwires so what do you thinks what can it be the problem ?

que dado utilizaste para quitar la tapa

SteveXnycperformance says:

Yes ,the Optic spark distributor device is one of the worst hi-voltage distribution system even seen. Summit and Jegs does make and sell a replacement direct fire coil system which replace the optic spark. GM(chevy) was broken down so the import can play ketchup and exceed. All automotive technology are GM(global Motor) today.

Thank you.

Thomas Sanderson says:

Thanks for breaking this down and explaining whats going on.

What a hunk of Crap this opti is. And they had the technology to go distributorless. Chevy knew that this POS was gonna be a big money maker.

SteveXnycperformance says:

the best 8mm wire are the TAYLOR SPIRO-PRO with a silicone insulator and a steel core. its the best wire for transferring Hi-voltage with a minimum lost. The TAYLOR wire are Lifetime, you will need it since the LT1/LT4 engine are a real pain in changing wires. the wire can be purchase at JEG`S or Summit. Fiber-core (AC-Delco or others) wire are a waste of time

Here another video that might interest you. /watch?v=zhzrviiofJg

John Paul Makowski says:

well done, Steve! good information and procedure explanation. I will do this on my 1995 LT1. Do you have a video on using 8mm wires, or other performance issues?

MrOly076 says:

What is there to that distributor. Is it just the eye or are there any other parts in it that give problems. Im getting a code 16. I replaced the eye 6 months ago because i screwed up doing the tune up and didnt put the rubber seal that goes on the distributor plug back on. Now its on but the thing is acting up.

SteveXnycperformance says:

Si. También evitará que la forma de arranque del motor. En el distrubutor es una rueda referance árbol de levas / cigüeñal de datos aqucision.A No-Crank señal proporcionará un no-no-Cam spark.A señal proporcionará inyección secuencial.

Samuel Picasso says:

El lector optico puede ser el causante de que se corte la chispa repentinamente?? causando que se apague el motor de la nada, eso le paza a mi LT1

SteveXnycperformance says:

It with be even more better if the Factory OEM unit can be replace with a Hi-performance one. The water pump can also be replace with a electric water pump. this will eliminate the need for a camshaft driver water pump. This car belong low budget driver. I`m pretty sure he own a 4 cyl Toyota or Honda. Most ppl don`t fix cars today, they finance it.

Lonnie Greer says:

wouldn’t be easier and more efficent to replace the cap and rotor or even the whole distributor with a new one? that’s what i did after pulling all that shit apart. no reason to put old back in after all the work it is to get to the opti, also dont forget to change all the timing cover seals. cam, water pump and front main. they leak like a siff

1983MontejanoAlfredo says:

I replace allready six distribuitors i always see alot of rust how can i prevent that from happening

FetidToecheese says:

Very educational - thank you!

SteveXnycperformance says:

true, but the screw are taper-thread and will lock it self once engage/tighten to the plastic rotor.

MaeveTremayne says:

Dealerships…

yo mama says:

You should have put locktite on the rotor screws.

SteveXnycperformance says:

venom1145 says:

my grandma is giving me her 1992 buick roadmaster estate wagon and it has this 5.7 liter engine

SteveXnycperformance says:

Yep. only on the vacuum vented distributor

SteveXnycperformance says:

Its is alway best to install the protective fiber cloth over the spark plugs once install the wires can be attach. The protective fiber cloth can be purchase @ summit or jegs.No injectors can not be hardwired.Have you investigate the cold state injector. Somewhere along the engine wire harness is a faulty ground. It might be time see a technician

TheBottNa says:

SteveXn, thanks for your help. Finally fixed thank God. Followed ur advise, and found two probs, cylinder 6 plug was cracked inside heat shield, and found a bad ground under coil. While helped, still issue persisted. First time ever doing opti took about 7 hrs, the balancer was a real biach, non the less swapped the opti, now runs like an escape goat. Opti bearing slightly moved. God bless brotha. Never aware a faulty egr or airpump issue possibly affect performane. Care to explain? Thx again

SteveXnycperformance says:

It might be a bad ground in the engine wiring harness. Try to locate the service manual in your local public library. Check the science and technology section. Also try replacing the fuel filter and inspect the stuff inside the filter by draining all filter fuel into a glass bottle for inspection.Make sure the ign wires are not touching the exhaust manifold.OBD pcm are not likely to go bad unless flash with the incorrect software. a faulty vacuum EGR hose will also affect the performance.

TheBottNa says:

Thanks for responding. Major tune-up is maybe 1yr 1/2. 96k No new apps have been added since 1 1/2 yrs ago. And no ses, and cluster bulbs all there & working. More info- when it rains rains extra bad & recentely doesnt matter if i reset pcm, now allways bad. My wires maybe? coil? I just bit the bullet and bought an oem gm opti ( dredded ) cause im leaning on that. Can pcm be bad? Plugs are 3 months old, but same old wires. Last 02’s? Thanks 4 the help, and thanks for the bird compliment-regards

SteveXnycperformance says:

95 TA 6SPD “NICE WHIP” ,when was the last time you perform a major Tune-up? whats the mileage? any custom application install? most of the time ground connection to the body will cause issue, any SES lite?.

AandWProductions says:

Replace the harness wire that connects halfway at the intake down to the opti.

TheBottNa says:

Great video.. QUESTION plz, my 95 TA 6SPD has a real weird prob. Starts everytime, doesnt stall but runs real crappy, backfiring at idle, no power, feels like half motor is dead. If i reset the pcm over night, runs good for 5 min, then crappy. At times turns good then bad? The pcm and opti works obvious,? but noid show injectors not pulsing (ground)? Running out of cash. Can one hardwire all injectiors to run 24/7 to temp fix this issue? Even if rich, will it work? Also high rpm=failure. Wires?

Jon Jaramillo says:

idk the mechanic changed it… so he says. but im thinking he just got cap and rotor.

SteveXnycperformance says:

is the opti spark a AC/DELCO or DELPHI?

SteveXnycperformance says:

generally, it is the high-resolution signal that is the first to fail. If this occurs, the ECM will generate DTC P0372, but the engine may still run, sometimes seemingly quite well. If the low-resolution signal is lost but the high-resolution signal is present, the ECM will generate DTC P1371. In this condition, the engine will not run, as there will be no fuel pump operation, injector control or ignition fire. You either need a new optispark or you need a new opti harness.

Jon Jaramillo says:

P0372 code. any idea why this is coming up? just had the opti replaced so it shouldnt be doing it

z352kdaf8324 says:

the lt1 coilpack and/or coil wire is rusted?

oompa6ZonA says:

i like the videos, very informative.

b chjf says:

sorry for all the questions, but would that make my car kick back when trying to start ?

SteveXnycperformance says:

yep. the cap must be fully seated, heat will cause the cap to flex, making the cap electrode pull away from the rotor alignment.

b chjf says:

thanks, but if my cap is not fully kissed together would that cause my car to run that bad ?

SteveXnycperformance says:

the valves might need adjusting, the ignition timing is ECM control and is non physical adjusting.

b chjf says:

i have a 94 t/a did valve job and changed cap and rotor, now my car is kicking back when starting and timing is too advance or off,did your job fix the problem ?

dizzle2190 says:

thanks i needed this

xDetroitMetalx says:

Haha, nicely done! In 5 years save us 5k? God I hope not! For all of you that don’t know GM AC Delco or MSD units ONLY!
