These are most definitely caused and/or made worse by not maintaining properly..my Dad has a 1st gen 3.5 Ecoboost F150 Platinum(also more power than lower pkg f150s) he bought new and now has 160k on it and had never had any probs other than reg wear items such as battery and alternator, etc. Actually doing oil changes on time instead of 6-10k miles like seem to be the norm these days does wonders for your engine. He even still has the factory turbos and still no oil leaks. I recently asked him at what mileage the updated phasers were put in cause of all the vids i see posted about how crap they are. He said he refuses to fix them til they cause any issues.
Crossing my fingers – 191,000 miles on my 2014 F-150 with the 3.5 ecoboost and still doing well. I did have an occasional rattle at startup, but just several times and then it goes away (usually happens when it's really cold in winter but also if it sits for a week or so). Bottom line though, every day I start it, still rare to get a rattle.
They have to have a good bit of VTP clearance for a phaser to move that much and valves are not tap dancing with the pistons
Why I drive an old 4.6 4V Lincoln! No payment, good power, and reliable as an anvil!
Who's on the hook for this repair?
Triton 2V all day buddy
190K on a 5.4 Triton, always use Mobile 1 full synthetic oil, changed every 5 to 5 K so far no problems.
Do you have to change the gear on the crankshaft

Any thoughts on the 6.2 engines?
I often wonder if Ford engineering has a separate department where their full-time job is to design things to fail.
