This is also a good occasion to check the overall health of the engine. How do you comment on the appearance of the metal components underneath the plastic cover (eg. cams, shafts, gears, chain?) I also would like to know how many miles does the engine have and what is your average oil drain interval. Thank you for the video and for your feed back!

I ended up having to do this job twice on a Astra J 1.6, it's not a hard job to do but my advice is buy a quality gasket. I ended up buying a gasket from the dealer as the no name brand eBay special leaked even worse than the old one that came off. The no name leaked so bad it let oil past and filled up all four spark plug wells after a few months and was dripping oil. The clue to a poor quality part is when the new gasket doesn't stay in the rocker cover when upside down.

UK Customer: Would you have a look under my bonnet?
US Mechanic: Sorry fella, we ain't that kind of shop.

Craig, that Orange crud that you found on plug caps and down in plug well, it looks like the foam from the underside of the insulated engine top cover, and when this gets aged it breaks down ( through time and exposure to heat) into a crumbling dust. Paul m.

No matter what you do. This gasket will always leak oil at some point.
I have something to ask Craig, if I may.
I own a '02 Ford Fiesta with the 1.4 litre Duratec engine, pretty much the same family as yours.
The problem is that the intake manifold is flooded in oil. I replaced the PCV valve but nothing changed, so I installed an external oil catch can and this thing seems to work, but oil evaporation is desperate, like nothing I ever see. Oil consumption is pretty bad too. Anyway, the compression test showed some good and even compression amongst each cylinder.
I think that It might be the oil at this point, because all this occurred by the last oil change.
By the way the oil separator and PCV valve are the same as yours.
Thanks in advance!
