How To: Replace the Thermostat in a 2009 to 2017 Ford F-150

How To: Replace the Thermostat in a 2009 to 2017 Ford F-150

These instructions and detailed video show a step-by-step thermostat housing unit replacement on a 2012 Ford F-150 XLT, but will be similar for Ford F-150 XLT models equipped with a 5.0-liter engine from 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. These replacement instructions will also be similar for 2011 to 2016 Ford Mustang models with a 3.7-liter V6 engine, as well as 2005 Ford Expedition models. Replacing failing thermostats and cooling system components helps you maintain a safe and functioning cooling system, and can prevent permanent damage to your truck’s engine due to overheating. If you notice that your Ford overheats, has a coolant leak, takes a long time to heat up, does not heat up at all, or if it fails to produce heat, you should replace the thermostat and thermostat housing as soon as possible to prevent more severe engine damage.

Your Ford F-150’s thermostat housing guides coolant back to the radiator and covers the thermostat, which controls the coolant flow to keep the engine’s temperature regulated. Replacing a failing thermostat and thermostat housing on your 2012-2017 Ford F-150 can help improve your truck’s performance and may prevent high coolant temperatures from allowing the engine to overheat and damaging your engine’s internal parts. Thermostats can stick in the open or closed position, allowing coolant to either always flow or not move at all. If your Ford F-150’s thermostat housing or thermostat is failing, your engine may overheat, the engine may heat up slowly or fail to reach operating temperature, or you may notice a puddle of coolant beneath your truck, pointing to a failed thermostat housing or gasket. It’s a good idea to replace a failing thermostat and thermostat housing to prevent a coolant leak that can lead to the engine seizing or being damaged. These detailed instructions will help you perform a thermostat housing and thermostat replacement on your 2012-2017 Ford F-150.

Wait for the engine to cool down, then place a fluid catch pan under the radiator petcock.

Open the petcock and allow the coolant to drain into the drain pan… and close it once the system has been drained. Disconnect the hoses and electrical connector, the. Remove the air intake tube to gain access to the water pump.

You may also need to remove the accessory drive belt by loosening the tensioner with a breaker bar and sliding the belt off the pulleys. This prevents the belt from being contaminated by the coolant from the thermostat, which can cause the belt to slip.
If your F-150 has a separate A/C compressor belt, it can be covered with waterproof plastic.

To remove the thermostat housing, release the spring clamp on the coolant inlet and disconnect the lower radiator hose.

Then you can remove the bolts at the coolant inlet connection. This will allow the thermostat housing inlet to be removed from the housing. Remove the old thermostat… and the O-ring.

lubricate the new O-ring with engine coolant. Then. Install the new thermostat and O-ring. Then reinstall the coolant inlet and bolts… and torque them to 89 inch lbs.

Now you can reconnect the lower radiator hose and re-engage the spring clamp.

If there is any coolant on the drive belt pulleys, rinse them with clean water before reinstalling the belt.
