My son has one of these and he has trouble opening his tailgate. We pulled the cover off and don't see anything broken off from the inside of the handle. How do you adjust the rods on the mechanism that mounts to the handle on the inside?

Robert Emery says:

I was having a very hard time opening my tailgate. Finally I used enough pressure on the handle that it broke. I followed this video to replace my tailgate handle on my 01' F150. Could not open the tailgate, so I removed the liner and cover while it was closed. Once the cover was off, I removed the handle. Prior to opening the tailgate I used Blaster Silicone Spray Lubricant on all moving parts and both latches going into the sides of the bed. By pressing down on the handle of the latching mechanism that the handle is used to press down on, the latches on both sides of the bed opened easily. Once the tailgate was opened, I sprayed both side latches with silicone and the bed now unlatches very easily. In the future I'll keep the silicone handy for preventative maintenance rather than using the "Armstrong" method. Great video, was very helpful. Thank you very much!

Tom Brueggen says:

lekocafe you're right. My handle simply ripped, the plastic tore. I couldn't pop the latch with a screwdriver, so I had to cut the strike bolt off with a sawzall to get my tailgate off. Now I've got a bigger mess! Also the weld on the left side hinge broke, so i have to replace all that. Years of abuse I guess.

one other note. these handles tend to break a lot, but it's been my experience that the lock mechanism tends to get full of road grit and dust. I'd recommend dousing the hell out of any moving part of the tailgate latch, before you put the cover back on. it will feel like a brand new truck, when you do that.
