How to: Replace power steering pump and flush PS fluid (Ford, Duratec HE, Mondeo)

Removing and refitting a power steering pump, and flushing power steering fluid, on a Ford Duratec HE. This is Mondeo but the principle will apply generally.

You will need:

* Jack & axle stands
* Socket set with ratchet & bar
* Quality flare nut spanner for the 18 mm hex line union fitting
* Pulley puller if removing the pulley
* Torque wrench
* Vice grips
* PTFE O-ring seal, Ford # 3518119 (required)
* Replacement O-rings for the reservoir (if old ones damaged)
* Power steering fluid, originally to Ford specification M2C195-A (old)…

** Warning! Some fluid product listings online are listing Ford spec M2C938-A as a replacement for M2C195-A. That is Mercon LV ATF and I’m fairly sure it’s an error.
* A fluid pump of some sort to extract fluid from the tank before removing its hose.
* Rags to soak up spilled fluid.
* A container in which to catch old fluid.
* Container in which to dispose of old fluid.
* Funnel.

Great video!!

Mine was leaking because of the O-ring between reservoir & pump being worn out. Replaced that and the problem is gone. It just surprises me that you have two on yours. I am not sure it is the factory layout.

My pump was moaning horribly with the new fluid it's much better, but that's all I'll do to it, as the engine uses way too much oil and it was a 300€ car.

Hey, just did the fluid change (Mercon), thanks for instructions!.

One thing I'd like to know is where to find diagram/part number listings that you've show as I've been looking for years to find a good one for part numbers?

Peter Sarlai says:

Nice! Thx Craig! What pump did you get, new or recon? And where from? Do you think a teflon tape would work instead of the ring?

Henrik Lindström says:

What's the website to view the assembly and exploded view of the system? Very nice video!

Excellent tutorial as always, Craig. Miraculous enough, I just very recently got issues with my steering (v6 version). Is getting a bit noisy and steering influenses idling speed. Looking the problem up at forums like Talkford, there is mentioned that it's wise to replace the waterpump at the same time with PS-pump, since the 2 parts are connected. I believe that's about diesel engines. But have you considered the topic (replacing both parts) for yourself? Kind regards from the Netherlands.
