+Emily Lopezz when you disconnect the VSS the PCM goes into default mode to
allow the vehicle to operate in some capacity. By unplugging it and with
those results, I would say the VSS is shorted or faulty. When connected,
the PCM does not know what state the car is in, whether it is moving or not
and therefore doesn’t allow normal
Operation. My thoughts on it. Hope it helps. Replace the VSS.

Larry W says:

+Emily Lopez yes it is possible but I never experienced any reverse gear
problems. Have you checked the trans fluid recently? Clutch packs do burn
out eventually. Make sure the fluid is topped off and pinkish clear on the
stick. Check it while hot and running on level surface. Also, is your
speedometer acting up? This is also a sign the VSS is shot. I think you may
have bigger issues but VSS is a good cheap fix to try first.

Christina Davis says:

This is awesome! But now I think the transmission guy ripped me off! He
replaced my transmission. I’m still having problems. I took it back and he
said it was fine. It shifts hard between first and second unless I acted
like I was driving a manual. I hope this works!

AB Tiburcio says:

Thanks Mr. Larry, I have a Taurus in Brazil, and I was very dificult to
locate this part…thanks again….

Laurence Chen says:

Hello All, This is a great video and probably saved me 2500 bucks at the
tranny shop or otherwise I would’ve sold the car for parts or donated it.
Shame on Ford for coming up with a terrific looking car with a lackluster
engine design & below-par powertrain.

I’ve done the VSS on my ’05 Taurus SOHC last week, the part I got from
Autozone is a bit different than the one in this video; it has two ends
connected on a rubber wire that’s about a foot long. Couple of things, if
your car is post-99 model year, you might have to start the car a few times
before the computer recognizes the new speed sensor. It’ll also be a great
idea to check for ATF levels and leaks in the transmission since you hace
the car jacked up.

Yes, you can get to it from the top of the engine bay. Removal of the
intake is almost imperative unless you have REALLY hands. However, it’s
somewhat necessary to jack the car up to see if the connection of the
sensor is tight and the bolts are in place properly from the bottom of the
car (at least for 00 thru 07 models), if you have a lift then this job is
very painless since you’re getting to it at a very good position and angle.

By doing this replacement, the 1st to 2nd gear shifting has improved 90% on
my car but the problem didn’t disappear completely. There’s still
occasional hard shifts and jerking from 1st to 2nd on hot days but it’s
much more tolerable than before. Although the problem hasn’t been
eradicated completely, I still wanna share my thoughts and thank Larry W.
for this video.

larry,
I bought a 2004 Taurus for my daughter.. I think I have the same problem..
It runs fine for about 20 minutes, then when i come to a complete stop, it
revs up and kicks into 2nd hard, feels like a small to a heavy rear end
collision.. Everything else works fine, reverse and every other gear. Its
this what you meant by stuttering?

emily lopezz says:

thank you very much! we will do a.s.a.p. i’ll get back to you.

Nicholas Dill says:

I think this is whats wrong with my automatic mustang. gonna give it a try
before I have some transmission place tell me its gonna be 2000 lol.

Tony C says:

Hey Larry have exact same car with same problem. Did you remove catalytic
converter to get to speed sensor?

emily lopezz says:

thanks larry. fluid is good. took electrical plug off of top of
transmission and now have reverse and first and second. drove it around the
block. larry what is happening? thanks

Laurence Chen says:

Hello Larry, great job!

But can you tell me where exactly is the VSS on a 2005 Taurus SE? Any
diagrams or charts you might have on this thing? Thanks a Million!!!

djbrothersteve says:

OUTSTANDING!! I have the same problem in my ride I’m glad I saw someone do
this I have to do the same to so I can head out of town. Instead of paying
190 for someone to do it.

emily lopezz says:

could this also cause my 1999 Taurus lx to slip in and out of gear when
rpm’s increase? reverse and drive

Scott Jenkins says:

Great video! My 99 Taurus is doing that, and even the add coolant light
comes on once in a while. Thought you were in my car… I’m going to
replace that VS Sensor. You just saved me time and money. Thanks!

Patrick Volpe says:

’97 ford Taurus LX Ax4n trans—**temporary fix** i used :if you need to
drive (to the parts store for example) disconnect&secure vss plug from
sensor to prevent false readings as it is broken. Put car in 2nd gear and
then accelerate until the engine reaches at least 2000 rpm bur not more
than 2500 rpm, you will feel more fuel get fed in like the computer is
expecting third gear. then shift into drive and you should go into 3rd
gear. don’t try this on a downhill slope it wont work .If you need to stop.
AFTER YOU STOP shift to 2nd and when you are moving shift to drive when you
think the car will handle it (speed/slope). – just like a stick shift. I
drove to Boston and back like this(700 miles). Be careful. This worked
flawlessly for me but you dont want to brick your car.

joel martinez says:

Hi i have a 05 ford taurus and my problem is thatt my speedometer goes up
and down like crazy when i go the speed limit and also it accelorates by
itself and say check transmission can my promblem be also the speed senser

Alan Burch says:

Hey I have a 94 gl its got around 210,000 on it I belive it has a diff dash
in it from a sho. Mine will do this in 3rd to 4th but its not really bad.
But my rpm is like yours it stays on the 1000 mark. When in park did you
find out what makes yours did it

tuddersXx says:

Ive had the same problem on my 99 sable for 5 years now, I figured out that
if you shift into drive without overdrive it helps the 1st to 2nd mess up,
and then if it still wants to be a bitch when its warm, take off a little
bit faster than normal so it shifts at a higher rpm. I found this and very
quickly hit up autozone, one problem tho, I cant get at the damn thing.
well I can get to it, but theres no way i can get a wrench in there.

Panagiotis F says:

did it almost feel like it was stalling out aswell?

Patrick Volpe says:

’97 ford taurus LX Ax4n trans, No speedo cable on vss:
you may need to remove bolt from rear engine mount to get better access for
removal.

B- Rad says:

Ah, the glory of owning a Taurus.

alexstang87 says:

Hello Larry W!!
I have a 06 taurus, the car is presenting a similar symptom, it changes
very hard from first gear to second, the speedometer works fine, cruise
cntrl works, but when the car reaches normal operating temperature it start
doing the hard shifting only from 1st to second gears, the rest of the
gears apply smooth, reverse also applies and works great. I noticed that if
I remove the negative battery terminal (when hot) the hard shifting
vanishes for about 45minutes, then it does it again. I have changed the
EPC, Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor but haven’t replaced the VSS

LALOMAN says:

To everyone that owes this crap of a car, the only good thing about them is
the fuel economy since these cars are used by law enforcement, they seem to
waste very little gas… anyways this problem of a bad shifting from the
transmission is well common in these Torus vehicles due to a faulty SPEED
SENSOR! Yes the speed sensor goes bad in most of the Torus do to
manufacture defect… I had to replace the speed sensor TWICE and every
stupid mechanic was telling me it was a bad Transmission and wanted to
charge me a bitch load of money! Fuck them street no good mechanics! If ur
Torus shifts harsh from 1st gear to 2nd gear and jerks ur car as you see
the needle jump like crazy when accelerating then YES its the speed sensor
and NOT the Transmission!

Jenna Brown says:

Hi I have a ford taurus 1995 3.8L v6 w/ 107k miles everythings
bein, maintained everything works, there was notthing wrong with my car
until the other day when my car would not shift out of first gear rpms
raised up to 4000 & still barley going and when letting go of gas pedal it
seems to slow down and it feels top heavy like to engine is weighing down
the front of the car when not presding the gas no one knows wat it could
be, do u thibk it is the vss? Thank u

Douglas Adams says:

Thank you for the video. I’m going to try this today, I have a 98 Taurus
with the ax4s transmission. I couldn’t find the stupid thing yesterday.
Looked for about an hour.

Chris Lambert says:

I have a 2005 ford Taurus with DOHC 24v. That is doing the same thing. I
called to get some part prices $ 27.99 for input< $77.99 for output<. Do i need to get and replace both of these to fix the issue.

Nick James says:

You put 197k miles on that? Impressive! Especially for a Taurus

Larry W says:

@letsfixthatcar It had around 190,000 at the time. Its well over 205,000
now and still shifting perfectly! However, I struggled with the VSS issue
for months until I figured out what it was. Even took it to a professional
shop and all they did was change the fluid, which I had already done!
Change your VSS as soon as possible to avoid possible damage to the trans,
it only gets worse. Its inexpensive and easy to do.

Larry W says:

Robert, the trans is electronically shifted by the PCM which gets its
reading from the VSS. Does your speedometer work or does it jump around
while driving? If you have a bad VSS then the PCM doesnt know how fast the
car is moving and wont shift correctly. Check for bad connection since you
just had work done. Might have cracked the sensor when changing the mount.

bugsy3802002 says:

my problem in my 99 sable i have same engine 3.0 l 24 valve it dosn’t shift
second gear only first and reverse..did u think is the vss?

Jose Quijada says:

Hey thaks buddy, that helped me alot i had the same problem with mine and
guess what, it’s fixed!! thanx again buddy…

fivefortyeye540i says:

@allthingsvideo how in the Hell did u manage to that out from the bottom I
working on one right now and it is no joke. This one seems to be sized in I
got the bolt out but the sensor is a biatch to get out.. I had to pull the
crowl..

Larry W says:

@karlmhoon YES! It is definitely the VSS. Get it changed as soon as
possible to avoid accidental unneeded damage to the transmission. The part
should only be $20-$30 and labor will probably be 1 hour at a shop. Well
worth the time and money and the car will drive nicely again! Thanks

Larry W says:

What website? The Taurus website is a free forum. Don’t know where you got
pay got answers from? They were very helpful. What questions do you have?
Can I help?

craze1701 says:

I have a 2001 Taurus. Would this fix a slight hesitation while maintaining
speeds between 30 and 60? I also have a slight hesitation shifting from 1st
to second, and maybe the problems are related.

fernancu22 says:

wow I have a 99 that shifts and slips hard from first to second I am going
to try this thanks.

Shift Hika says:

Does not sound like a speed sensor. If shudder is in 3rd or overdrive
suspect Torque Convertor or related circuit. TO TEST While driving in
overdrive keep steady pedal and constant speed take left foot and very
lightly push brake for 1 second or 2 just enough to disengage convertor
clutch but not enough to apply brakes. You will notice rpm raise slightly
take foot off and notice rpm drop if shudder occurs you have a convertor
issue.
