I had a similar problem with a Subaru, it would persistently start on the second crank only. Not the first, not the third, the second always. I changed the coolant temperature sensor, one that is emerged in the coolant and it fixed the problem. These sensors get covered with a layer of slime and oxidation and become less sensitive. You may try to clean yours and see if it makes a difference. Better yet buy a new one. It is a bit of a long shot there are many other things that may be causing it, but it worked in my case, …it was not a case of hard to start random cranking, but always like clockwork on second attempt.
