Ferrari 360 Heat Exchanger Failure – DIY Repair Part 1

Ferrari 360 Heat Exchanger Failure – DIY Repair Part 1

There is a common failure on the Ferrari 360 which is the transmission / coolant heat exchanger. The theory is that if you don’t change the coolant regularly, the copper in the heat exchanger corrodes and eventually it fails. When this happens, the coolant start pushing into the transmission and transmission oil goes into the coolant. Fun! So you not only have to replace the broken heat exchanger, you also have to flush out the transmission, and the cooling system. Likely you will have to replace some other components too. It’s a lot of work.

So our new Ferrari 360 for our dealership, NG Supercars arrived and when driving it home, it start to get hot so Josh shut it off and had it towed home. Unfortunately he found oil in the coolant so we immediately knew the heat exchanger was broken. We got the new heat exchanger and began to work on the Ferrari 360 to repair it and get it ready to be sold.

Inacio F. Marques (EyeOfDarnkess) says:

I saw a 360 that someone bypassed that heat exchange and installed an air to air heat exchange for the transmission, if i see the guy again will take pics

mariodesmo says:

Good job so far, only one little nipple on the coolant tank broken off. I'd put a blanket covering the console with all the jumping in and out, just in case…

Dimitriy Kosovay says:

Much simpler when done as preventative, as you skip all the flushing. I think 355/360 were same part. I believe the F430 has one too but those fail less than 355/360. Usually caused by neglecting to change your coolant on time. As the additives break down they eat through the aluminum in the exchanger.

Robert Lenahan says:

Hey who's garage is that?? Anyway, good job so far but damn that looks hard! Can't wait to see how this job turns out! Thanks for being honest with the trials and tribulations of super car ownership!

Nacho Ferrari says:

Agh! So disgusting when oil and coolant mix together! Awesome work guys! But Josh… sandals? Really, man? That´s so unprofessional haha! 😀

Joseph McCormack says:

Good work guys. Great car and necessary maintenance. But well
worth it.
The thing that gets me about supercars is….why do you have to take the engine out to change a windshield wiper?
I'm just kidding but everything seems like it was hashed together at the last minute.
But what do I know?
Great video.

NDPesic Group says:

Great work guys !!!

Peter Evans says:

Great video! worth it just for the music!!!

the says:

Dan what is the current price on this 360

sw651 says:

The new owner will appreciate all the scraped knuckles and bleeding you did on this car.

Michael Butcher says:

Doesn’t look fun. Your brave for taking that on.

Arvin A. says:

Thats why I change the trans oil and coolant yearly. Cheap preventive and diagnostic expense.

Neal says:

I saw the bird at 14:33.

Jim Cear says:

Did mine before it leaked , needed to replace a knock sensor too. . I took my intake manifold off. Needed lots of universals , socket magnets , grunts, groans and a willingness to fly like Superman lying on the engine. I’ll be interested to see how you do it through front of the engine .
