How To Replace A Water Pump – 09 Dodge Charger 2.7 (Step by Step) water pump replacement

How To Replace A Water Pump – 09 Dodge Charger 2.7 (Step by Step) water pump replacement

In this video, we will go step by step on how to replace the water pump on a 09 Dodge Charger with the 2.7 engine. This engine can be found in base models 6th generation (2006-2010) Dodge Chargers.

Water Pumps on these Dodge Chargers are notorious for going out. If you own one of these vehicles be prepared to replace the water pump at some point (if it hasn’t been done by a previous owner or something).

The water pump is an internal water pump and is timing chain driven and takes about 5.9 hours in labor time according to the labor guide.

I’ve done this job a few times, but it’s been a minute since I’ve had to do one. I’d rate the skill level needed for this an intermediate skill level. Definitely not for beginners, but if you feel confident enough to take on this job then GO FOR IT!

Boss thank you Savin's here . Your probably getting tired of me.
So when I go to put the camshaft chain in clothes says to line it up on the cam market at 12 o'clock
That I do. Next is the main chain I put the small guides in. Then I Put the chain on the LH SPROCKET AND INSERT IT ,LINE WITH CRANKSHAFT. BUT IT WONT STAY IT KEEPS MOVING OUT OF PLACE. ON THE MAIN SPROCKETSTHAT BOLT TO THE CAMSHAFT. I PUT THE LEFT ONE FIRST THEN THE LEFT ONE. I ALSO PUT THE LONG GUIDE ON LH SIDE.
QHEN I GO RO PUT THE BOLTS ON SPROCKETS, I START WITH THE. RIGHT ,WHEN I TURN WITH 3/8IN THE CANSHAFT MOVES FROM 12 OCLOCK TO ABOUT 2 PM. AND THEN I CANT KEEP THE CRANKSHAFT LINK I PLACE WHERE THE TOOTH IS LINED UP WITH THE OIL PUMP. I DONT KNOW WHAT RO DO. 10 DAYS ALREADY UP SOWN TON THE CAR UNDER THE CAR THEN GO BACK TO THE TOP. THIS TIME THE LINK IS ONE TOOTH OF WHEN I PUT THE2 LONG GUIDE BEFORE I PUT THE TENTIONER.

Thanks for all the information and tip's, you skills are very high and professional

Aaron Davis says:

How long did this job take you?

Savino Bieber says:

Alex thank you, I need help. when I crank the motor doesn't start but the upper radiator gets full of pressure right away? can you tell me what it might be? a clogger radiator, or a head gasket

Wesley Wrinkles says:

Why would you turn the crank without the timing chain on? This is an interference engine and your cams weren't in the right position. Unless you get lucky it's a good way to bend a valve and then you got a whole mess of problems.

gmpetey05 says:

Good video but to ask did you have any timing issues as the sprocket wasn’t lined up with the oil pump and the Passanger side. Was slightly off

edier herrera says:

Thank you very much for helping me something else, identify that it is the water pump because it is draining through a small hole that is next to the engine under the antifreezer thermostat

edier herrera says:

Hello, how are you, what kind of oil did you put in the end and tell me if I can change the water pump myself and if it is mandatory to put a new chain

Ignacio says:

Hello Brooo! please help me.
Is it possible to change just the tensioner without disassembling everything you disassembled to access the water pump?

very recently, they put a water pump and a tensioner aftermarker on my 2.7, after a couple of weeks began to make noise when starting it in the mornings, (I think this noise is because the non-original tensioner is with problems) the car runs super well, has not jumped the chain, it's just that when you turn it on in the morning sounds, after being perfectly lubricated I turn it back on and the noise is gone.

I would like to know if replacing only the tensioner can solve the problem, I think that's the problem.

My idea is simply to disassemble the valve covers (to be able to activate the tensioner as you do in 1:10:13).

pull the tensioner out from the side, put the tensioner back on and activate it.

Is it essential to tune the vehicle first, or can I just remove the aftermarket tensioner and put the new one (mopar)?

because to check that the vehicle is on time, I would have to do all the steps you did to check if the mark below is correct, that implies disassembling the damper.

thank you very much in advance

pd: forgive my writing in English, I am writing from Chile.

Jonathan Litman says:

I have a 2002 chrysler sebring lxi with this exact engine with 61k miles on her. The car engine has a ticking sound when it warms up, and had acceleration issues. What I mean by acceleration issues is it has a hesitation issue and a jerking issue when driving. There are no transmission of engine codes, no oil leaks, no coolant leaks, and no transmission leaks. The trans fluid is nice and read with no shavings in it and it does not smell burnt. I am at a loss trying to figure out the issue with my car. Don't really have a good mechanic near me. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also, the car sat out in the florida sun before I got it. Maybe that had something to do with it.

The milky stuff is oil and water mixed due to the water pump failure. Hope the there was an oil and filter change otherwise I would think the engine failed soon after.
