DIY: Dodge Ram 1500 Parking Brake Replacement and Adjustment

Video tutorial on how to replace the parking brakes, beyond the shows, this also includes the parking brake lever and adjustment procedure for a 3rd generation Dodge Ram. This is a 2006 4wd model equipped with a 5.7L V8, so there may be some variations between the models. To produce this video, Bosch has been kind enough to provide me with the parts required for this replacement.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-locking pliers
-safety glasses
-new spring kit
-new parking brake shoes
-standard screwdriver
-brake adjuster tool
-brake cleaner
-wire brush
-brake grease
-jack with stands

Procedure:
Safety elevate the rear of the truck. To make this easier, I have supported the rear of the truck on jack stands so I can do both sides at the same time. Make sure you do block the front wheels and even engage the 4wd if equipped so the truck doesn’t roll.

Crack the cap on the master cylinder reservoir. Remove the wheel. Compress the caliper using large interlocking pliers. There are two 10mm bolts, use a 3/8” ratchet. Hang up the caliper using a bungee cord.

You can remove the pads or leave them on. Mine is being replaced so they will need to be removed. Remove the caliper carrier, there are two 21mm bolts here. Remove the rotor. You may be required to back off the adjuster for the parking brake, there will be a little rubber cover which needs to be removed.

Next is removing the two hold-down retaining clips. The old ones on this truck just clip into place, however, the new replacements are a quarter turn to connect or disconnect.

Using locking needle-nose pliers, remove the top spring and make note of its location. Remove the adjuster. On the bottom, remove the retaining spring. Remove the one brake shoe. There was a spring at the top which fell out of its place making the disassemble easier. Then remove the other brake shoe.

To remove the parking brake lever, the parking brake cable needs to be removed. Compress the retaining spring tabs are the cable and push it back. A hammer may be needed to operate the parking brake lever if it’s seized. Pull the spring towards the end of the cable, to expose the cable so it can be removed from it’s clipped location. Finally twist the cable out of the parking brake lever.

To remove the parking brake lever, pull out the boot to give more movement. The lever can only be removed and installed in one direction, for the driver’s side, pull it towards the front of the truck.

Clean up the hub and backing plate with a wire brush to remove any loose debris. Wash any debris away using brake cleaner and allow it to dry.

For installing the parking brake lever, install the boot onto it, I also have the boot a light coat of rubber safe silicone spray so it doesn’t catch up on the backing plate. If you are having issues, you may need to rotate the hub as I found the lever was catching up on the lug stud heads on the backside of the wheel hub. Pull the rubber into place on the rear of the backing plate. A standard screwdriver with no sharp edges can be used to help assist it in place. Once that lever is in place, you can then clip in the parking brake cable. Clip the cable into the retaining bracket.

First, the inner white spring at the bottom must be installed. Stretch the spring with shoes over the bottom pivot point, this does take a bit of patience. The shoes also need to be interlocked into the parking brake lever as well. Install the adjuster and make sure it’s backed off all the way. Install the top spring, using locking pliers will certainly make the installation easier. Install the outer lower spring.

Install the retaining pins. Install the opposite side. Install the rotor. At the moment it’s roughly setup with the adjuster so there is mild drag when installing and removing or rotating the rotor. Once the other side is replaced, a final adjustment is done and I’ll show you how to do that.

Remove the wheel on the other side, they use the same process to disassemble the brakes.

To adjust the parking brake, put the parking brake lever down so the shoes are centered in the assemble. Go back to each wheel and manual move the adjuster so there is mild drag when rotating the rotors.

Install the caliper assembly in reverse of removal. For torque specs, refer to my other video.

Those levers are sure pains in the asses to re- and re-. I thought it was just me! The key, as mentioned in the video (starting at 4:00), is that the stud bolt heads can get in the way but rotating the hub even just slightly makes all the difference.
