94-02 ram headliner replacement with custom fabric DIY

In this video I show you how to replace the 2nd gen Ram headliner fabric with a custom fabric of your liking
.
I apologize in advance for losing the section of video where I remove the headliner and then remove the fabric from that. The missing section isn’t difficult . I would recommend that you first set the front seats all the way forward and folded, release the headliner from the front and try to set it on the dash, then release the rear of the unit and shimmy it around till you get it out of the truck.

-I can’t stress enough, the foam backing has to be completely removed from the headliner unit before you can apply your fabric. You will be attaching the fabric to the fiberglass located under the foam backing.
-Remove the headliner unit from the truck , rip off the old fabric, use a wire brush to remove the foam, use rubbing alcohol to clean the surface when done.
-choose a fabric of your liking from your local fabric store. however, keep in mind that you will want something fairly thin and or fairly stretchy to get around bends and corners easily.
The fabric I chose was very thin, not very stretchy, and it came out very well. It wasn’t too difficult to manipulate into place.
-Spray fabric with light water, throw it in dryer till all wrinkles are gone.
-Drape fabric over half of the headliner unit, get it perfectly lined up and ready.
-Spray the exposed half fabric and half headliner unit with your choice of adhesive, let it dry to the touch, typically 10 min.The glue I prefer to use is 3M High strength 90 contact adhesive. it can be found in most construction supply houses near the paint section.
-Slowly and gently lay the fabric in place starting from the middle and working your way out.
gently lay it in place until you are happy with the lay out.
-From this point you need to massage it into place starting out gentle and pushing harder as you go, once again starting from the middle to the outside.
-Once you are happy with the results complete the other half of the application in the same exact manner.
-Stay close by for the next 24 hours, keep it fairly warm and keep checking for areas that may have lifted off the unit. simply massage these areas back down with a lot of pressure.

-If, after 24 hours, any areas don’t come out so great and you can’t convince the fabric to work with you, use a heat gun very cautiously to heat it up and convince it to comply with lots of pressure. BE CAREFUL! you don’t want a burn mark in your awesome new headliner!

Good luck…..thanks for watching! Let me know how yours turned out in the comments!
