Sea King Chrysler Outboard Cooling Failure Impeller Pump – How to Clean and Install

Sea King Chrysler Outboard Cooling Failure Impeller Pump – How to Clean and Install

This video is on how to inspect and clean up the impeller housing, impeller plate and impeller. When we originally got this Chrysler Sea King started, it started to overheat. I was able to clean up the impeller pump housing and plate and use a gasket sealer to put it all together again. The results are great and the engine now runs at around 140 degrees F. This engine does not have a traditional tell tale and doesn’t “pee”. It does have an exhaust port where the heated water comes out of in lieu of a tell tale.

Here are affiliate links to some of the items I used in this video:

Permatex Water Pump Sealant https://amzn.to/3xwtIB3

I’m running a 24:1 mix on this for right now. I did that because of the age and being unsure of the proper mix for it. I’ve done more research and found that this engine can run 50:1 so will be transitioning to that in the future.

I’ve also shown exactly where the shift rod connector is in this video if you are looking for that information.

One interesting aspect to these old Sea King motors is that you may think that parts are difficult to get. In some cases that is true. But what I have found is that this same engine, originally manufactured by Chrysler for Montgomery Ward, was also made under a number of other labels. Chrysler, Mercury, Force and Sears Game Fisher all had basically the same motor. Many parts are interchangeable!

Just picked up a boat with a 9.6 sea king. Was worried it wasent spitting enough water. But it ran all day didn't overheat and after watching your video seems to be putting out the same amount. But if I need to check for debris or new impeller now I know how. Thank you

I really appreciate this video! I’m currently fixing a 1980 Chrysler Sea King 15 Horse. My uncle had it after he and my dad overheated it over 20 something years ago. The head gasket is blown and I’m in the process of replacing the impeller. I have the lower unit off and the impeller still looks intact, but there seems to be calcium or something dirty. Could cleaning it and replacing the impeller do the trick? I’m also getting the head machined at a shop as well as a new head gasket. Thanks!
