How to Reset a Chrysler Transmission Control Module. In this video I am showing you four different methods for resetting the transmission control module (TCM) on Chrysler vehicles. Resetting your TCM can often resolve issues like harsh shifting, acceleration problems, slippage, and check engine lights.
The TCM is essentially the brain behind your Chrysler’s automatic transmission. It’s a computer that controls functions like shift timing, shift feel, torque converter lockup, and self-diagnostics. When it gets damaged or malfunctions, a TCM reset procedure can recalibrate it to restore normal operation.
The transmission control module (TCM) uses input from sensors on the engine and transmission to control shift timing (when to shift gears), shift feel (timing between shifts), torque converter lockup for fuel efficiency, and to run self-diagnostics that check for problems. When the TCM malfunctions, issues may occur including harsh/premature/delayed gear shifting, check engine lights coming on, acceleration problems, and gear slippage.
The four TCM reset methods I demonstrate in the video include:
Pedal Reset Method – Also called the Italian Tuneup method. You turn the key to On, press the accelerator pedal to the floor and hold for 10+ seconds until the check engine light flashes, then release it and restart the vehicle. This recalibrates the TCM by resetting it and clearing temporary memory.
Battery Disconnect Reset – Locate the battery and disconnect the negative terminal for 15 minutes. This clears power to the TCM, forcing it to reset once the battery is reconnected. Start the engine and let it idle to complete the procedure.
OBD-II Scanner Reset – Using an on-board diagnostics scanner, you can access TCM reset functions directly through the OBD-II port. Follow the scanner prompts to reload default settings which resets all learned shift adapt values.
TCM Replacement – If diagnosis confirms internal TCM failure, replacing the entire module may be necessary. Refer to a service manual for proper access, removal and installation. Use a scanner tool to program if needed.
Before replacing a potentially faulty TCM system, attempt the simpler reset procedures first. A pedal or battery reset offers an easy DIY solution. But for persisting transmission problems, further professional diagnostics and replacements may be needed.
