Yeah thanks for having this video! They’re some of us who find this Very Helpful
thank you! about to change it on my 97
Very cool video and very informative. I have a 1989 GMC Suburban and this video helped out!
I don’t know if I would use simple green as a cleaner, but I do use brake cleaner on the rear end sense it doesn’t leave a residue
My rear end slips when I make a complete stop Im not 100% sure if that’s the problem any ideas ? I have a 98 silverado z71
I’m leaking fluid from the differential so I’m assuming
the seal is the problem.
I hsve sn 1988 Chevy CK1500, I’m assuming it’s the same or at least damn close. Does the truck have to be raised?
The small diff (1500) takes 2.2 qts and the heavy ones are 3-4 qts or more depending on the weight rating. I recommend a synthetic oil because it lasts longer and you don’t have to mess with it as often.
I have the same 8.5 diff in my Tahoe, the axle seals were leaking, it was only half full of oil. There was a bunch of burnt oil deposits in the carrier. I added 8-oz Marvels oil and 2-qts of cheap gear oil, ran the truck 1500 miles and drained it. Pulled the axles, replaced seals and all the black crud was gone. Refilled it with high quality synthetic gear oil for extended service… Great Demonstration of a neglected service
Redneck truck? You got some fancy rednecks where you live… Great video though, just handled my leaky Tahoe with this tutorial.
I did my 1994 Gmc Serria in silver next time it will be red or blue.
actually i like the way the rear diff oil smells like lol just like candy
Great vid. I always wondered how u fill it. now I know. Oh and paint lookz awesume

Rear end does not get that hot, not sure the purpose of using high heat paint.
when i saw the thumbnail i thought it was aftermarket. so i’m impressed with the result next time u might want to use paint for high heat.
I woulda painted it black, like oil, that I spray under my truck every year so I don’t get rust. Then everything matches. Hooray!!
Better silver then rust. What’s the point having a nice pretty truck when the underside sucks? Green or Orange is redneck, silver, not so much.
OH MY GOD ! He painted it silver ! geez. Now it looks like a redneck truck. Hey “TIP” Put the gasket against the cover correctly then put 2 bolts through the cover and the gasket on opposite sides, then start your 2 bolts in at the same time by hand. OR put 2 dabs of silicone on the gasket and stick it to the housing.
inconvienent!! I like 2 bolts, top and bottom like my Toyota…remove all bolts and make sure no leak..take time to DRAIN AND FILL..common Chevrolet..copy TOYOTA!
Thanks for the video. Approx how much oil is used to refill the diff?
thanks informational
Thanks for the video man very informative
Better make sure ur plug not rusty and strip out before you drain fluid…
Passenger side.
I have a 1997 1500. I didn’t exactly catch where the fill plug was located it was hard to tell from your camera angle could you get back to me on that…. Thx
I had such a hard time with this. I spent an hour scraping off the old gasket.
Nothing particular. As long as it meets spec.
Flawless job except for the silver paint. Looks horrible. Just go with a satin black next time!
Great video. Thanks alot!!!!
Thanks for the video turbo. Good maintenance equals a good running vehicle
Thanks.. Great video anyways..
No, I had a 1998 W/T and it had a locking differential (G80). Limited slip differentials were never put on those year trucks, only cars.
Yeah…its got some excessive wear, the unit may need a rebuild sooner then later. I would fill it back up with oil and hope for the best.
Newer ones perhaps, older ones, including S-10s, they have a limited slip. I believe the service for a locking rear is the same, however there may be a TSB about using additive, so you’ll have to consult a dealer on newer trucks.
Hey, great video man, I have a question, I have some excess wear where you pointed was the “top” of the ring gear, I put my finger across the top of each tooth + they feel slightly rigid. The rest of each tooth is fine. when I first removed the cover little gear oil came out which explains why it was making noise up at high way speeds, is this minor wear, caused by insufficient amount of gear oil, or is it something I should be more concerned with?! Thanks..
For the pickup trucks GM does not use any kind of limited slip differential. GM uses what is called a locking differential on the trucks.
Yeah…a wire brush if its really rusty…then a degreaser of any kind. Technically primer, the paint, would make the best finish, but given 99% of them out there have no real paint at all, its all better then what it was.
So you just wipe down the cover and clean it with something like Simple Green? and thanks for the video man, very informative. Planning to do my rear end on my 1997 sierra this weekend.
Great job, you’ve motivated me to do it in my pick up truck. Watch my channel i have some other minor Job Thank you for your tips.
The pretty paint makes it go faster.
I’ve found that Krylon chrome paint doesn’t last at all, but I think it’s metal flakes in the paint rusting. I’ve had good results coating it with clear coat once it dries tho.
