In this video, 1A Auto shows you how to replace head gaskets on a small block Chevy 350 / 5.7L engine. While we did this on a 1996 GMC Sierra K1500, this process is essentially the same on all small block Chevrolet engines.

SO NOW, I HAVE TO HANDLE THIS NICE NEW JOB…BUT HEY YOUR VIDEO AND THE IDEA OF USING CUTOUTS FOR ALL BOLTS AND ROCKERS, ETC IN THE RIGHT PLACES FOR RE-INSTALLING…FREAKING AWESOME IDEA

THANK YOU TONS, LOOKS LIKE I HAVE ME SATURDAY PLANNED NOW!! AND YES I'M A GIRL WHOM LOVES WORKING ON HER OWN 1980 CHEVY K5 BLAZER!!!

Anon Ymus says:

I found that the pushrods are just short enough to fit into sandwich bags. I just label a sandwich bag for each rocker assembly and separate them that way

Wow….you are so clear! THANK YOU

NEW VIDEO IDEA: Please do a video on unceasing an engine that is taken apart like this.

Bruce Wagenberg says:

Spectacular video on the subject. Where do you find torque specs and sequences?
How many billable hours was this?

Alpha420dog1 says:

Great video just wondering how long did it take you to do all that

gir489 says:

38:28 Legend has it that razor is still in the engine.

E J says:

Just got my heads off. What a mess inside. Ima take a few nights cleaning everything up before going back in on installing.

SlickDawg says:

What happens if you do rotate it counter clockwise I asked because I did turn it back like 2 inches the first time.

Fernando Medina says:

I replaced a head gasket on a 4 cylinder and didn’t have to remove the push rods and rocker arms. Can I still get this done without removing them on the 5.7?

E J says:

In the process of doing my 96 Silverado 305. I hope I get it right.

Where is the crankshaft sensor located on this motor?

Patrick Fagnan says:

It wasn't a bad how to video except, at no point in the video did you talk about machining your heads, or even checking them for cracks .which you would want to do if you had a blown head gasket! Also you left off the exhaust heat sheilds!

Andre Chico says:

Just bought a 1988 Chevy 1500 5.7 350 V8. Drove it home from San Antonio to Dallas and it drove smoothly, the next day it overheated and the check gauges light came on. I pulled over and let truck cool off topped off coolant . Now it’s smoking out the tailpipe, and the engine oil is milky . Sound like this could be a blown head gasket? Previous owner said thermostat and hoses were never replaced. It also feels like the hoses are crunchy when I squeeze it. Can anyone help?

VIP854 says:

I'm very confused here. Your video says to torque the heads down to 22 foot pounds but if you Google it other sources say the head should be torque down to 65 foot pounds. I also find it hard to believe that 22 is all that's holding these heads on. Either way that's a significant difference and my torque wrench only goes down to 30 so I'm going to have to go buy another torque wrench if your video is accurate.

ffhgu 07 says:

Honestly if you can replace head studs with bolts and you live in the rust belt I reccomend to do it

John Sears says:

The same way you do every other engine.

bryce1916 says:

This engine looks like it was burning oil , he should have pulled the engine and done a cheap rebuild , new rings and hone the cylinders plus new valve seals at the very least .

Skyler Hagen says:

If your engine is still on #6 compression TDC from doing your second round of valve adjustments, be sure and rotate it one more full turn back to #1 compression TDC before installing the distributor. Not sure if this was mentioned.
