i just replaced both of mine and the allignment is off my steering wheel is constantly to the right?
tie rods arent the same in every car/truck and this video is for a cadillac and probably the least owned car.i have a 99 gmc jimmy and im sure its not the most popular truck either but i cant find 1 video on how to check or replace parts on it,really frustrating.
what is the torque u tighten it to?
thanks you did great job explaining!
This is how videos should be ! Concise and showing all necessary steps ! Thanks
Why is it that when I turn the nut on the bottom of the tie rod end, the whole bolt or shaft spins forever until eternity or I get pissed off & grab the acetylene torch? I just need to get the damn thing off for a few minutes so I can replace the cheap-ass hollow anti-sway bar with a real one.
NRA Rules.
You dont do the alignment you need to take it to a shop for that . Most places charge around $50 for the alignment in Arizona. Just call around and ask for a quote for your vehicle for a front end alignment.
Great vids just subscribed
yeah that because their charging you for them getting the part and money. then they have to pay the mechanic
Great video, I need to change mine out and you just showed me how easy it is to do myself thank you!
PS I remember seeing somebody using a ‘pickle fork’, would you use one on a tie rod?
Thanks again
you said at the end “now your ready for an alignment” how do we align it?
hey i got a question for you. i own a 99 town car and when i turn the wheel it doesn’t center by it self.
Firestone
I live on a marine corps base and firestorm tried to charge me $128.00 for the part only, another $134 for labor
for my 1991 Accord, it’s under $20. Try looking up your car’s make and model on Rockauto.com (cheapest prices for name brand parts but with shipping, parts can be more expensive than Autozone’s Duralast parts)
about how much does an outer tie rod cost on average?
Lol I was looking and you are using the same exact car I’m replacing it on. Good choice
Do Japanese car come with grease fittings? i don’t think they do theses days - thought that was a thing of the past.
Excellent video! May tackle this over the weekend
220 for both of mine, they wanted to charge over 300. if i saw this video first, i woulda done it myself.
This cost me 180 total! I’m doing the other side on my own! Thanks everyone
Man that’s simple, wish I had a lift!
Nice job.
nice lift buddy how much do those run roughly. would you know off the top of your head?
I just bought outer tie rod, Pitman arm , idler arm and lower ball joints. What order would I replace these parts in ? Thanks for your time.
you can pick up a grease gun at any automotive parts shop, homehardware, or canadian tire…if you’re in canada haha but they shouldn’t be too hard to find
Just wanted to know where can I get a grease fixing can or whatever that was? AND yes I’m a girl tryin to fix this on my car. I’m NOT paying a shop to do this I think I can handle this. Please answer me 🙂

Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to post this.

What brand and model of impact wrench is that? Thank you
Very helpful and simplified. Thanks.
I have the locking nut on the tie rod end instead of the cotter pin. I got it about half way and then it wouldnt budge. the whole bolt it is attached to is spinning. Tried wrenching on it some more with a leverage bar and got it like 3/4 of the way. But WONT move anymore. Am i doing something wrong? Maybe i stripped the damn threads. Can u help me?
This guy knows what he’s doin, well done vid’s very easy to follow.
My steering wheel wanders when i’m going over uneven surfaces, like if there’s a bump on one front wheel and the other wheel is on flat ground, the wheel will pull to the bump side. I’m scared about going to a mechanic because I don’t want to be paying for something I don’t really need. Do you think tie rod ends and an alignment would solve this, or should I look even further. I just want to have a nice crisp stable steering wheel response like an Acura TL is supposed to. It’s sloppy!!
That looks so easy, yeah i think ill do this rather than pay someone around 100$ total do it.
Myth busters ftw!
thanks
Depends which way you are looking at it & whether it has right or left hand threads. This one was right hand threads, but I had to turn it clockwise to loosen it because it was “jammed” up against the outer tie rod end & I needed to loosen the nut away from it. You have to look at these backwards sometimes.
I used a 1/2 inch impact wrench. Sometimes, if the stud starts to turn with the nut, I hold the nut with a wrench & turn the hex on the end of the stud clockwise to loosen it.
how do you get the lock nut off of the ball stud? Mine is loose until the end then it binds up.
The old one had a lock nut.
I didn’t see a cotter pin on the old tie rod end, but one on the new. Was there no cotter pin on the old or did you not show the removal?
Help, when I loosen the jam nut, should I go clock-wise or counter clockwise?
please respond
I ended up knocking the alignment off really bad, adjusted it so its now driving straight, but I will get it aligned here this week, it probably needs it anyways. Thanks!
Tire wear would be my #1 concern. If you put the new tie rod end back in the exact same place, it won’t be as bad, but you should still get an alignment as soon as you can.
Is there any real safety concern for not doing an alignment after changing one sides tie rod end? The rest of my suspension is tight with zero play besides the passenger tie rod end, im not too worried about tire wear as I need to replace them soon also, and I plan on changing the struts soon aswell and was hoping to wait until then for alignment. What do you think? Thanks!
