BMW F15 X5 Water Pump & Thermostat Replacement DIY (2012-2019 BMW X5, X6, 335i, M235i)

BMW F15 X5 Water Pump & Thermostat Replacement DIY (2012-2019 BMW X5, X6, 335i, M235i)

►The modern BMW engine is getting more and more electronically controlled. This includes the water pump found in this BMW F15 X5 engine. Because it is not a belt-driven water pump, the usual failure point is inside of the pump itself. This job is relatively simple, with just a few tools and a little know-how. This job should be done if you see any leaks coming from the water pump or thermostat housing and if you are seeing fault codes 2E81, 2E82, 2E85.

Thermostats are a simple device that regulates coolant flow through the engine. When cold, it will stay closed, stopping coolant flow and helping the engine warm-up faster. Once up to temperature, it will open and allow normal coolant flow and maintain proper engine temperature. Thermostats can fail in two ways: stuck open or stuck closed. If you notice your engine operating temperatures are higher than normal, it could be a sign that your thermostat is on its way out. Thankfully the thermostat on the BMW F15 X5 is in a convenient location for you to access and replace.

Gareth Foley, our BMW Catalog Manager, is back in another video to walk you through the steps of replacing the water pump & thermostat on this BMW F15 X5.

CAmera angles were insanely good, helps a lot! Thank you FCPEuro for helping us keep these pain in the ass cars affordable to own rather than pay a shop to do it!

Richard Vaughn says:

Great video Garth. One of my next project. BIG question for you: Lots of discussion on the Forums about those (6) 16mm head (10mm threads) reinforcement plate bolts, as they are "torqued to yield". BMW TIS says to replace them BUT not many do. That being the case, what if you/I torque them to the 56Nm & only do about 45 deg additional.? Is that a bad idea? I wasn't sure I understood your recommendations. Thanks for the Aluminum coolant flange tip, great idea. Thanks again. We need more F15 videos!

Angelo Frederic says:

Thanks for video. Have you done a oil pan replacement job on F32 N20 engine?
