The Audi Q5 came into the shop with the low oil light on and a knocking sound. Technician inspected the oil and found it to be very dirty and 3 quarts low. Last oil change was done 15k miles ago

That must have been some cheap conventional oil. And the fact that it was low. I've gone 15K miles on Pennzoil Platinum once or twice before and it never turned bad or anything like this.
The color tells me something else is wrong.
15k miles is not a lot. What car is that?
I change my oil every 30k miles and still think its to much for what they charge for a full oil service.
