Audi S4 V8 Timing Chain Problem and Repair

Audi S4 V8 Timing Chain Problem and Repair

My 2004 Audi S4 V8 has a bad rattle on start up. Mechanics quoted £3,000 + £900 Parts to fix it but there might be a cheaper DIY fix…??

have a deposit on a 2007 A8L.  4.2 FSI… do you believe this engine could also suffer from the poorly designed R Valve and o-ring.  Maybe the o-ring becomes distorted from non original Audi engine oil used over many years.  New condition Oring fixed it correct?  Same issue may have damaged that ugly huge intake gasket.  Just my guess brother but it could be the mystery issue here.

My 04 Audi a8l 4.2 new rattling started a few weeks ago.an audiworldforum post similar problem due had an actuator arm/broken.i checked mine Boom sure enough broken.i fixed it..it was a slight ticking a week b4 me stumbling onto that prob.a slight loss of power.then misfires loud rattling engine light then flashing i parked it.it still is messed up cam shaft sensor code and bank1& misfires@2&4 fixed sensor car sounded great 10min. Drove down hill and up rattling came back.scanned showed cam shaft sensor bank 1misfires2&4 .engine speed sensor..started up. A few days still bad rattling. New scan sats same plus a Circuit fault.
..And thoughts or similarities. Maybe a little oil under car not dripping but there under car. i slide into a pole on ice before this started happening..(6° pittsburgh pa) Also do you think the actuator link arm has anything to do with the problems???

I did this same part swap on my 2006 A6 4.2L, about 6 months ago as I already had most of the parts out to of replace a leaky O ring on the base of the oil filter housing. My car didn't have the death rattle at the time (125k miles) and still doesn't at 130k miles. Glad I replaced the parts. Wish I had seen your video first, it would have really helped.

I have a 3.0 asb engine and they suffer the timing chain death rattle issue too. Do you think I am making a big assumption in suspecting the diesel engine will suffer the same non return and gasket issues.

Gregor Shaw says:

You wouldn’t possibly be able to send me the part numbers for the parts replaced? Many thanks in advance

Did this fix the problem? I have an audi with the same engine, it has new chains, tensioners and guides but it makes the rattling or "clanking" sound bout 2 seconds after start. The sound is short but i pulled the motor again and after disassembly, cant find anything wrong with the chain system…

Damn… I'm looking at buying one of these for about $5000 and it doesn't start. Fella says the timing chain needs replacing… Whaddaya think mate?
