How to Replace Antifreeze/Coolant for Honda/Acura – Shown on 2002 Acura TL-S

ALWAYS MAKE SURE ENGINE IS COOL BEFORE REMOVING RADIATOR CAP! REMOVING THE RADIATOR CAP WHILE THE ENGINE IS HOT CAN CAUSE COOLANT TO SPRAY OUT, SERIOUSLY SCALDING YOU! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURIES. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK WITH CAUTION.

My recommendations to ensure a long lasting engine:
– Never let your antifreeze/coolant get dark or dirty
– Never let your coolant reservoir fluid level get below the MIN fill line
– Change your coolant every 60,000 miles or 5 years whichever comes first
– Never add any rust inhibitors or additives to your car’s cooling system as there’s a good chance they will not be compatible with the coolant or engine components
– Only use Genuine Honda All Season Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2! It’s made very specifically for our aluminum engines to prevent corrosion and deposits in the cooling system. Seeing how this only needs to be done once every 5 years, it’s worth the extra $10 over cheaper brands.
– If another brand of coolant is to be used, make sure to use a non-silicate coolant recommended for aluminum engines with a mixture of 50% antifreeze and 50% water.

I wonder if the process is the same for a 2004 tsx?

I own a 01 Acura cl type s but I watch your videos as they are the same process

Jellyfishumbrella says:

Thank you so much!!!! I had THE hardest time getting the radiator drain to turn…but we did it!

Maxillian Cherry says:

THAT ENGINE BLOCK COOLANT DRAIN VALVE IS FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE GUYS I HAVE TRIED IT IS JUST BETTER TO HIRE A MECHANIC TO DRAIN IT TRUST ME ON THIS THIS GUY DID SOME MAGIC TO GET IT I DONE , I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE MAGIC HE USED. BUT DRAINING THE ENGINE BLOCK IS ESSENTIAL UNFORTUANTELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FOR THESE 2G TL'S THAT ARE APPROACHING 20 YEARS BECAUSE THERE IS SOME BAD SHIT IN THE BLOCK RUST PARTICLES AND SUCH THAT WON'T BE REMOVED UNLESS YOU DRAIN THE BLOCK THROUGH THE ENGINE COOLANT DRAIN VALVE FUCKING ASSHOLE ENGINEERS THAT DESIGN CARS TO BE MADE THIS WAY.

Google User says:

So when the car is cold, the reservoir, not the radiator, should be filled to the max line correct??

LetMeSeeThis99 says:

That breather bolt at the back sucks!!! The old owner use the green stuff or it could look like old Honda blue. I really wished you pour both old and fresh Honda blue then show the comparison.

Marshal Man says:

Great video! Extremely informative! But I do have a question: why do you need to fill the radiator several times? What's the problem if you roughly measure the volume drained out (as you showed in the video), and then simply pour the same volume of new fluid into the radiator AND the reservoir at the same time (as opposed to filling the radiator several times and finally topping up the reservoir)? Thanks

Called And Chosen One says:

I have the same exact car. Color I will look to your channel for helpful tips. Thanks for sharing.

Milly Moo says:

Hi nice video, so you bleed/burp the system with the radiator cap on? How does air escape? I see a lot of videos showing to do it with cap off can you explain thanks

Jorge Gonzalez says:

Can you do it for me honestly I feel like I’m going to do it wrong

radiohead4everrrrr says:

Chris fix said to flush it out with distilled water and a bottle of coolant flush. And then drive it around for 10 minutes. Is this okay? I’m a little concerned about driving with water and not coolant.

Rafael Angel says:

need to do the same to my TL, I just got it and the reservoir was fill up with gunk.  the car runs very very good,  is a 2000 model with 245k . is the same process to do this ??  also any green anti freeze is good to use ?? or better to get the Honda type 2 ??

Car Chk says:

Hello again. Just wanted to thank you again for your informative videos on the type s tl. I have been able to complete the fliter change, coolant flush, thermostat replacement, new hoses, temp sensor replacement, intake cleaning, throttle bodies cleaning and replace egr valve. I will continue with replacing the valve cover gaskets and plugs. The the last big job timing belt and water pump. Any new videos are always appreciated. 🙂

How much do you think this gets out? 90%?

Fido 929 says:

Nice vid bro

Just A Trucker says:

Did that say 200k miles????

MrChad97Z says:

using tap water to rinse is not the best idea. While minimal in this case, unless the reservoir was dry, tap water contains ions which enables rust.

very helpful

JJDRProductions says:

I can't get the engine block plug pulled for the life of me.. I've tried everything.. it's stuck and stripped

Jake LI says:

Thank you for the video, it is helpful!
I didn't see you change the new breathing bolt on the video. So after all the coolant comes out from the bolt, then the bolt will be ok to remove, right?
