In this video I am pulling one piston out at at time from a 160k mile 5.3. This 5.3 will be going into my 1987 C10. I then show the removal of the dished 5.3…

A trick I saw on jafrommobiles youtube is to tap the ring compressor to be
100% sure it is flush with the top of the deck(use the handle of your
mallet).

Might save you a set of rings, nice vid all the same…I’m jealous of the
amount of covered space you have to work in/store stuff in

I’ve built thousands of engines, you did a great job,and as far as the
piston ring cleaning that is what RISLONE IS FOR, never leave it in your
motor longer than 5 days,it will clean the piston rings very well good
job,and I like the method of heating the rods,that’s why I watched,i hope
the engine gained some power for ya,I hate dished pistons,unless there’s a
turbocharger,oh yeah never use a FRAM filter they are junk and under
efficent

Machine shops hang pistons the same way, but I agree with previous comments
regarding replacing bearings and rings.

Can this job be done with the motor still in the truck? My 4.8l has a knock
that I cannot figure out where its coming from. The knock only happens
after engine has been running for 12 minutes. once it warms up it starts
with the noise then after 15 minutes or so it goes away. suspect its the
piston pin. Had it been a bearing it would be constant. Lifters were
swapped out so I know its not the lifters.

Actually its the other way around, the 4.8 and 5.3 have similar Hp but
different torque.

honestly man you should have done a better job your methods are perfect and
great but the work was sloppy in the sense that you did not replace the rod
bearings which is susceptible to spinning a bearing i know alot of people
who have done this not matter how good the bearing looks and reusing piston
rings? even if their good they will not have the same amount of spring
pressure.

Rember piston to valve clearance.4.8 and 5.3 have different springs loads.
That’s why they have similar torque but the 5.3 makes more hp..just don’t
rev it too hard till u look into this… a set of clevite 77, and bearings
set would have save you some headaches later on the pistons and rods.. LS
GM part can hold up upwards of 500hp just with High perf , rings, ARP bolt
kit..top and bottom, and high perf bearings. But you got to make a list of
all thise possible issues for later..but heading the right direction. .
CarTek books, have a great amount of literature on LS engine building
books..I have almost all of them..also look up David Vizard.. this guy’s is
a wizard when it comes to making power..Aussie engine bulder… later buddy

Oh. It’s experimental. That’s nice. I just pulled the pan on a ’91 F250 4wd
that my niece paid almost $4000 for and some peckerhead in Colorado
crocus-clothed the front crankpin, put standard bearings in it, filled it
full of (?) synthetic (85-120?) gearlube and a Sparkomatic radio and it
made it about halfway to Lawrence, KS before piggybacking two and throwing
one rod AND GUESS WHO GETS A PHONECALL @ 3AM MEMORIAL DAY ??? I don’t see
the point in “you all learning together”. All you gotta do IS ASK ME WHAT
WILL HAPPEN if you do such and such. Great Grampa was a Master Mechanic for
the railroad, Grampa did the same for Chevrolet and GMC heavy trucks, Dad
did the same for commercial passenger aircraft, and I invented the propane
powered floor cleaning machine. I got all their tools and knowledge. I have
refinished cam lobes and lifters with a belt sander. I have heli-arced
holes in piston tops. I have welded up gears and filed out the tooth
valleys. I could go on forever. What I am afraid will happen is guys that
DON’T KNOW you can’t do shit like this – will do it. THEN they will
(driving it around town for a week) THINK they fixed it OK – AND THEN SELL

Yeah, NO. Folks – don’t put old rings with more than about 1 hour run-time
back in a hole – it’s about 100 to 1 they ain’t gonna seat. Used pistons in
used holes is used-car-lot-junk-shit practice. And then with old rings? –
Kinda shit gives mechanics a bad name as dumbass ripoff artists.

Good vid. Can you also use heat to pop the old wrist pins out instead of a
press and does the compression (leak down) remain the same when reusing the
old rings instead of honing and installing new?

pure aluminum rivets in the wheel cylinder fittings on an IN SERVICE SCHOOL
BUS. I had to shove a .45 in that company’s General Manager’s snoot to make
him see reason vis-a-vis putting it out of service until a salvaged
cylinder and rebuild kit could arrive OR “just use it on level roads for a
couple days”. (He was a huge man or else we’d have thrown hands).

do what you are doing. Tell them you are accepting the grave responsibility
of operating said machine on public roads because as E.J. Potter said you
must “Do Your Own Research”. Serious Repairman (not “technicians”, not
“mechanics” ) – after DUE CONSIDERATION of the HAZARDS INVOLVED – SOMETIMES
HAVE TO OPERATE MACHINERY WITH THE SAFETY LOCKS OFF. I can just see some

You should make it CLEAR under EXACTLY what limitations you will proceed.
You knew they fly passenger lets with missing engines, no fire suppression
system, landing gear won’t retract/extend – and all kinds of other things
wrong? They gotta apply for and get a Ferry Permit. Usually it’s “Daytime,
below 10,000 feet, VFR (perfect weather), essential crew only, flight over
unpopulated areas, notify FAA and GADO before takeoff, minimum fuel – et
cetera, et cetera, et cetera…” It’s as simple as “Professionals nullify
ALL foreseeable hazards – so they can give their full attention to the ones
that pop up “out of nowhere”… YOUR litany should begin “It is my
personal automobile, it is perfectly roadworthy EXCEPT I am going to drive
it with engine damage, I will not carry passengers, I will THINK CONSTANTLY
of what I will do if the engine locks, billows out huge clouds of smoke,
pitches a rod, pumps oil on the pipes and catches fire, pitches a rod and
keeps running long enough to squirt pressurized oil on both front tires,
throws sharp parts on the highway at 80 mph in rush hour traffic, how I
will stop with no power brakes, how I will steer with no power steering,
locks bad enough the ring gear and torque converter saw through and climb
out the bell housing and wipe out front and rear brake lines, the crank
falls out of it and tries to pole vault the car, et cetera, et cetera, et
cetera. Might not be a bad idea to not play the radio, talk on the phone,
get on a busy highway – I think you got it AGH4L. You just didn’t have my
Dad to emphasize what is involved in working on shit that other people

It’s so hard to find wheels that look good on a 3rd gen in 17″ or larger,
those RONAL 17×9.5 Firehawk wheels were awesome but rare and big$$$ if you
find a set. There is this guy on thirdgen.o** that took the 91-92 style 16″
stock wheel and made them into 17 x9 or 9.5 and they looked AWESOME and he
said he would do a set for me and then just vanished on me, did not return
my calls or email so I just gave up on it, what a douche move by this guy
because its part of the reason I parted w/ my 91′ because if I had those
bad ass wheels I would have finished it, instead of selling it. At least it
went to a young kid who loves it and its his first car.

That’s a lot of work or .5 point of compression, hell you could have just
got an L33 5.3 which have flat tops and 10:1 already and it’s aluminum
block like an LS1
