U put the new filter on the canister cap…
Splashing can be prevented by removing oil cap before draining
You need a 1″ socket for the filter canister cap. A jointed arm for your
socket wrench would be helpful too because the filter isn’t in the easiest
place to reach. Mine was not in the same spot pictured in this video. There
was no way I’d even have space to turn a crescent wrench.
How to reset the computer after oil change
Several important details are missing from this video. As previously
mentioned, a crescent wrench should not be used to remove the oil filter
canister. It would be most helpful to know the socket size of the drain
plug and the oil filter canister nut. Finally, an important step in this
oil change is resetting the GM Oil Life Monitoring System. This was never
mentioned in the video.
Watch one thing though……they sneak this in the owner’s manual. They
want you to use a GM oil filter etc. If they find a Fram (or any other)
they’ll try to void the warranty. I had to order a couple of them online
because NOBODY had them yet.
Its best to get a socket to remove the filter. Using a crescent wrench is a
pain and you can strip the head on the filter cap.
I got pretty good at changing the oil in a Silverado and Ram, but when I
went to change the oil in my Sonic I was completely lost. I feel kind dumb
for having to look this up, but whatever.
One thing you forgot, take off the oil cap. This will help when the oil is
being drained, it’ll come out more smoothly.
TO RESET THE OIL IN THE COMPUTER ITS REALLY SIMPLE: 1. PRESS THE SIDE RESET
BUTTON UNTILL YOU SEE THE OIL ICON 2. HOLD THAT SAME RESET BUTTON DOWN
UNTILL IT RESETS BACK TO “100”

Thing that pissed me off is that there were no instructions in the manual
on how to change the oil. I kinda say screw the 5 yr, 100 k GM warrantee
though. I only use valvoline max life full synthetic and the offer a
300,000 guarantee on the engine ifu follow their easy rules. Thanks for the

Sonic Hatchback black on black RS.
Through further research I found the oil drain plug is a Torx T-40 and the
oil filter canister nut is 15/16″ . Two other additions are that GM’s oil
requirement for this vehicle is Dexos 1 (for gasoline engines) and not
Dexos 2 (for diesel engines), The Torx drain plug is not commonly found in
a DIY’s tool box, so be sure to have one before beginning this project.

what about the warranty ? Over here you loose your warranty if you do´nt do
maintenance at the dealer… I would like to do it myselfe because I hate
the arrogant and overpriced dealers

As long as you use DEXOS rated oil and keep receipt records you will
maintain your warranty! Save TONS of money by DIY 🙂

I concur with motosteele. Make sure the oil used meets GM’s Dexos 1’s
standards and is the correct viscosity. Dexos 1 (gasoline engines) & Dexos
2 (diesel engines) has been a mandate from GM for their vehicles since
2011. I have also confirmed that a dealership will take an oil sample from
your vehicle and lab test it. If not in compliance, there is no engine
warranty. As motosteel said “keep receipt records”. You can DIY and save
money.
