Sounds pretty much like what I have been doing. I saved a little economy car from the scrap yard and I have been putting a lot of work into making it a good driving car. Almost there mechanically. I have been putting a good chunk of change in each year it drives good now but it could use a new mechanical rack more for noise reasons than anything.
To get rid of old car smell just open up a small box of arm and hammer baking soda. Put that in a cloth bag so it breathe and not make a mess if you knock it over. Put it in a side pocket and next day it will smell so much better. Keep changing it every month.

transmission fluid change! i suggest one now, and again in 20k miles! drain and fill only. 🙂
